Mets SS Reyes named NL Player of the Week

June 26, 2006
NEW YORK (Ticker) - This time Jose Reyes gets the National League Player of the Week Award all to himself.

A week after being named a co-winner along with teammate David Wright, the New York Mets shortstop was named as the award winner on Monday.

It's the third straight week a member of the NL East-leading Mets has been honored with the award. Outfielder Carlos Beltran was the winner two weeks ago.

Reyes led the league with a .613 batting average (19-for-31), 1.032 slugging percentage and .613 on base percentage. His 19 hits, 10 runs, two triples and 32 total bases also led the NL last week and he tied for the league lead with four stolen bases.

The first Met to win the award in back-to-back weeks since pitcher Jesse Orosco in 1983, Reyes had six multi-hit games, including three four-hit outings while raising his batting average from .272 to .302.

Reyes leads the league with 34 stolen bases and 67 runs scored.

Other candidates for the award were Ryan Freel and Aaron Harang of the Cincinnati Reds, Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies and Reyes' teammates Jose Valentin and Wright.
