CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Two days after his scheduled start, Jon Lieber takes the mound for the struggling Chicago Cubs when they begin a three-game series with the New York Mets.
The Cubs suffered consecutive losses to the Pittsburgh Pirates before Sunday's series finale was rained out.
Lieber (0-0, 5.40 ERA), who was scheduled to start on Sunday, did not get a decision in his first start, last Monday's 5-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed three runs and eight hits over five innings.
The righthander, who won 20 games last season to emerge as the Cubs ace, will be making his first start at Wrigley Field. He was 12-1 with a 3.39 ERA in 17 games at home last season.
Lieber won his only start against the Mets last season as he held them to two runs and six hits over seven innings in a 4-2 win at Wrigley on June 26.
New York turns to former Cub Steve Trachsel (0-1, 1.50) on Tuesday as it looks to continue the run of solid outings by its starters. Mets starting pitchers have a 2.38 ERA through six games and no starter has allowed more than three earned runs so far.
Trachsel had a 60-69 record with the Cubs from 1993-1999 and did not fare well in his only start against his former team in 2001. He allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings in a 13-4 loss at Shea Stadium on July 5 in the end of a disastrous first half.
The 31-year-old Trachsel was 9-3 with a 2.74 ERA after the All-Star break last year. In his first start this season, he allowed three runs -- one earned -- and seven hits in six innings in a 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
New York posted consecutive wins in Atlanta over the weekend, but on Sunday Marcus Giles hit a three-run home run in the 14th inning to give the Braves a 5-2 win.
First baseman Mo Vaughn was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a broken bone in his hand suffered in Thursday's home loss to Pittsburgh. Vaughn is eligible to be activated on April 21 and the Mets are expected to use John Valentin against lefthanders and Mark Johnson against righthanders.
The Mets were 2-4 against the Cubs last season after winning the season series the three previous years.
