According to the guys on Baseball Tonight, Buster Olney is reporting that the Sox and the Padres are talking about a deal to send Mike Lowell to SD for pitching.
I think Lowell has been great, but the Sox do need a starter.
I am very torn about this. :(

With Young hurt and Peavy struggling, not sure if the Pads can afford to let go of a guy like Woody Williams or even Chan Ho Park. Did Olney mention any names??

No. He didn't. I think a 3rd team (Giants) was also mentioned, but they would only want to give up Schmidt. And both the Padres and the Sox can't have him. It's just strange.
On edit -- I just watched the late-night BBTN and they said that the Padres need a 3rd baseman but that, with Shea Hillenbrand having been released, perhaps that's where they'll go. My own opinion is that the Padres could probably get Hillenbrand more cheaply than Lowell.

Hmmmmm....I suppose since Lowell is having such a great year, the Sox think they can cash in on that? I don't want to see him get traded.
So what would that do to the infield? You can't move Youk to third because we've got no one to play first. Cora, perhaps? Cora and Gonzalez would make for a pretty weak hitting 3B/SS combo.

Olney is such a dumb ass. As if San Diego would or could pay Lowell's salary.

I can't disagree with that proposal. But it needs to be a good pitcher. How about Jake Peavy though he's having a rough season. He would get run support with Boston.

There's not one way SD is dealing Peavy.

Exactly. The idea of San Diego giving the Sox any decent pitcher for Mike Lowell is laughable.

wells is slowly getting back to pitching now...if we get him back and he pitches like he did last year, we should be all set. Schilling, Wakefield, Beckett, Wells and Lester is pretty damn good IMO.

Peavy, Park, Young, Hensley are not going anywhere.
Williams, like Park is in the last year of their deals so that the money is freeing up and SD CAN afford to take on some salary. Lowell's contract can easily be paid next season because Park, Klesko, Williams are the big contracts that will be done. That's about $25 million freed up right there.
I don't think the Red Sox will get what they need from the Padres though. Giants might be a better option.

Enough said.
San Diego will not give the Sox a decent pitcher if we dealt Lowell to them. It will be a horrible deal if the Sox gave the Padres Lowell.
No deal will be the best deal, because there's nothing, but medicore pitching in the market. I rather keep the team we have than deal one of good offense starters for a mid-level pitcher.
Sox are in trouble with SP, but don't make the situation worse. I rather have Clement and Wells than any mid-level pitcher we could get in the trade market.

I read on another forum that on Weei 850 am they stated that Peavy will be dealt in the Lowell deal. If, hypothethically, Peavy is dealt to boston for Lowell (and maybe somone else) Do you think it's worth it?

Completely agree, Lowell isn't even close to Peavy. They would need to deal a pretty good prospect as well if thats the case. Chris Young has been lights out, maybe they're go for Woody Williams who has playoff experience.

WEEI is creating a rumor due to wishful thinking. There is no way that Peavy will be dealt. He just signed a long term deal with the Padres and is on the way to being of the same stature of a Gwynn or a Hoffman is. Besides there is NOONE here in SD that are even mentioning a deal with Boston and this town is pretty good with REAL rumors.

Blue for God's sakes Lowell is a nice player, good defense, but please, the Sox would spin him in a heartbeat if they could get a decent reliever never mind a stud starter.
Lowell isn't worth much at all. I think we stand pat. Overpaying for some one else's 5th starter isn't gonna help us this year or in the future.

I said Hypothethically!
Peavy not moving.
Nothing more needs to be said beyond that.

Peavy would move if the deal was right. No one is untouchable. He's not coming here though. I am changing my mind again. I think Theo is going to do something HUGE.
