View Full Version : Things that need to happen if we want to see October

1: David Wells must come back healthy and effective.

2: Youks must get more rest. We need a back-up 1st baseman to spell Youks, or his average will continue to nosedive.

3: Coco must improve. His offense has been sub par, and his defense pitiful.

4: Beckett has to get better, his last 2 starts were good, he must continue that. Without huge improvement, we are dead. One good starter is not enough.

5: We need a veteran good reliever. The kids have been good, but they are reaching a lot of innings pitched. We can't expect them to continue at this rate.

6: Wake must come back healthy and effective.

Cat got your tongues slacker Sox fans?

Royce? You got an opinion? Sox fans are slacking.:(

Who ever wins the majority of the head-to-head games Red Sox vs. Yankees I think will win the East. I really don't think the Jays will be so close come September. But supposedly the White Sox had already clinched the Wild Card so I guess that's out of reach, I mean they were 6 games up before the All-Star Break, that's insurmountable! ;)

Weird, I was just posting. :D Congrats on the 26k post milestone, btw. :D

Well, the Sox and Yanks are 5-5 against eachother this year. 9 left. Every year except for 04 one team wins 10, and one team wins 9, so I don't see that deciding the division.

The only thing I do know, is that we can't afford 2 automatic losses every 5 games like we have with Wells and Wake gone. One has to come back or we're doomed.

Yeah, and when the WC comes out of the East again, everyone can kiss our ass. :D

I was just looking at the Yankees remaining schedule. Doesn't look extremely tough with the exception of the Red Sox, Tigers, and White Sox and potentially the Jays, Twins and Angels can be tough to beat. Its going to come down to the games vs. the O's and D-Rays. We also get the Royals once more. :D

Royce

The Sox have pretty much an identical schedule too. Pretty much the same teams.

I'm going to go eat something, be back later. :wave1:

Yeah, basically we need pitching. What team doesn't? :D

Coco's defense is pretty good. Why are you saying it's pitiful? Alex Gonzalez has been a nice surprise at the plate, and god damn is he smooth on defense.

They do need to go easy on the young pitchers right now. We don't need them burning out in September. Having Wells and Wake come back effectively would be huge.

Hasn't Papi's recent starts at first base been for the purpose of resting Youks? Papi isn't as horrid a first baseman as people are led to believe. I'd prefer they keep Papi at DH though to minimize his injury risk.

PissedPrincess

Coco doesn't seem to get good jumps on balls to me Babs. And his arm is as bad as Damon's. I'm willing to cut him slack because of his injury, but not much. :D

AGON is OCAB smooth x2.:)

I hate seeing Tiz at 1st. He is a decent fielder, but every time he stretches for a ball I cringe.:(

I'm just not seeing any big deal going down this year. :notme:

Didn't Coco hit like .300 with 20 HR's last year? WTF?

I don't see a big move going down, but I really don't know if we need to make a blockbuster. A bullpen arm would be nice, but we'll get that if our regular guys get healthy.

With any luck, Matt Clement will stay hurt. :D

That MOFO. Really. What a freakin disaster. He's so bad, we DL'ed him. Because he's on the DL we can't trade him.

I think you've already said it, PP. Pitching, pitching, pitching. Plus Coco and Youkilis stepping it up a bit.

I'm still drinking the Central winning the wild card's koolade though. ;)

One rumour I'm hearing quite a bit is getting Abreu and perhaps (long shot) Gordon (to be closer next year so Papelbon can be starter) and that Nixon will be part of the deal.

I think you hit it on the nose on all six points, princess

Coco was supposed to be our leadoff man, get on base, etc. and hasn't done that. I'll even say he's been my biggest dissapointment so far.

Without Youk, who would we put at leadoff?

and totally agree on the reliever. you can see it coming on. hanson has been shakey lately, and delcarmen gave up a few runs his last outing. Hopefully he can bounce back, but I would like to see another veteran guy brought in.

Royce

Why the hell would the Phillies take Trot Nixon?

cxlx
07-26-2006, 01:26 PM
I say no to Gordon.

I say the Sox are doing fine, we still hold second place in the best record in the league.

However, we do need Beckett to step it up and Wake to be healthy. Other than that, I truely dont have much compaints. I say get rid of the dead weights and we'll be ok. Taverez and Seanez (sp?) needs to go. Anytime these guys get in there with a lead, I always know that the lead will be erased.

Other notes:
Its nice to have the best defense in the league.
For once, I can say we have to best all around team.

1. The only team with 2 13 game winners.

2. #1 in Fielding Percentage
#1 in OBP
#2 in RBI's
#4 in BA

3. Rookie of the Year:
Papelbon - 29 Saves, 0.53 ERA
or
Lester - 5-0 record, 3.04 ERA

4. AGON - Best defensive shortstop in the AL.

Im pretty sure theres many more stats out there, but these are my favorites. If Im incorrect with any of these stats, please feel free to correct me. Thanks. :D

I looked at Papelbon's stats and realized how good they were and how they were better then Liriano's so my point was crap, so I deleted it. :D

Should have left it because Liriano is a starter and Paps is not. Yet anyway. ;)

I think Justin Verlander should win it though. :)

Royce
07-27-2006, 05:30 PM
Liriano is having a better year than Verlander. It's between Liriano and Papelbon, but its tough to distinguish a closer being better than a starter.

Buster Olney's ESPN Insider Blog: "Anybody who has struck rock while using a shovel could relate to the next trade tidbit. Heard from two talent evaluators yesterday that Boston is very active in trying to come up with a large and creative deal, involving more than two teams. Smart thinking, one of them said, if it all works. Crazy stuff you wouldn't normally think of, said another. An executive with an AL team reports that he's heard that a scout was rushed off his area coverage to go scout Boston minor leaguers.

"But here's where the rock-striking part comes into play. I don't know if this is just a pebble of thought on the part of the Red Sox, or if this is a larger trade boulder, like the huge Nomar Garciaparra trade Boston hit on a couple of years ago, with all those moving parts. The Red Sox are looking for pitching, and they've talked about Julio Lugo in the past.

"Red Sox executives are mum; execs from other teams say they are very active.

"Take it for what it's worth." -- 7.27.06, Buster Olney, ESPN Insider Blog (subscription only)

I wonder what it could be, if it's true.

I know that. I'd just like to see Verlander win it because I've been watching him and he's pretty damn impressive. :)

Liriano been an absolute beast this year. He was only beat up in one start this season. The other start? Remember Santana after the 04' AS break? That would be Liriano and the rest of his starts. Liriano could win the Cy Young and RoY this year. He struke out 12 tonight and went 8 innings. He's been absolutely dominating. A closer going for the Cy Young need to be near perfect, Gagne perfect, to win the Cy Young. I think the same will apply here since Papelbon up against Liriano.

Verlander can be tossed into the conversation, but Liriano has better numbers than him everyway except wins. Liriano didn't even begin the season as a starter.

I don't see that deciding the division.
Oddly, it decided the division last year since we both had the same record and Yankees were reward the division since they won the season series by one game. :laff:

To comment on your point about Beckett. Keep in my these last two starts were against the Royals and A's, two of the worst offensive clubs in MLB. I like Beckett pitching well, but he needs to do it against strong offensive clubs, like the Angels, which he will pitch against Saturday.

Yankeesfan27

Okay, let me make myself even more clear.....

Who SHOULD win RoY: Liriano

Who I WANT to win RoY: Justin Verlander or Joel Zumaya

If you mean unattractive, than I agree, otherwise I think you're still hungover from celebrating robbing the Phillies.

Lugo was my fantasy savior last year. I owe my loyalty to him. This year Chien-Ming Wang has been my savior along with Brian McCann and Eric Bedard.

The Red Sox season is over, they didn't make any needed trades, and too many people are down and out now.

Good game, Yankees will take the East.

:laff: don't let my wisconsin tag fool you, my friend. I only go to school there.

and you know what's realistic? what's realistic is that we still have 50 plus games to play, and we have NO IDEA what is going to happen. None. So to say the season is over is ridiculous, because it isn't. We lost tek, who was hitting .240, as was pointed out already. Yes, he handles the pitching staff well, but Mirabelli is more than capable of calling games, and he will give us pretty much the same offense.

Nixon is out, and we've replaced him with Wily Mo, who so far has done much better than anyone could have expected. Have you ever seen anyone get a broken bat double off the green monster?! now that's friggen power.

What else...ok, Wells just came back, and didn't do so well, but did you expect anything else? give him a few more starts until you start talking about him being horrible.

Look, I'm not saying that you should be completely confident that the sox are going to win the world series. Of course not. But don't give up on this team already. that's just silly.
