Why is there a trade dealine when teams can still make trades afterwards? Maybe it's because it's already 1:30am but I'm puzzled.
I have no idea either. However, as I understand, only teams in second or worse can make these type of trades. If we were in first, we would not have been able to pick up Lopez. Thank god we did since Doug went down yesterday.

How did Mirabelli twist his ankle on that play at home, it looked innocent but then he went down in a heartbeat.
Oh and also, if the Sox were in second place and the Yanks were in third, the Yanks would have had the chance to block or somehow try to screw up the trade.
And I have no idea how Doug got hurt. I started listening to the game in the 7th. But was only able to listen for half an inning. So Im not sure.

From what I understand, the trade deadline is the final day you can make a free and clear trade. After that date, the players have to clear waivers. Anybody ahead of you on the waiver line can bump you out and try to make the deal.
If I am missing something please let me know.

That's pretty much it. Many teams routinely place their players on waivers to gauge trade interest. The Braves for example placed Andruw Jones on waivers and an unnamed team claimed him. Atlanta had 2 days to work out a deal with the club or pull Jones off waivers, which is what they did.
Any player under contract may be placed on waivers at any time. If a player is waived, any team may claim him. If more than one team claims a player from waivers, the team with the lowest record in the player's league gets preference. If no team in the player's league claims him, the claiming team with the lowest record in the other league gets preference. The previous year's standings are used during the first month of a season to determine preference.
If a team claims a player off waivers and has the viable claim as described above, his first team may choose one of the following:
arrange a trade with the new team for that player within two business days of the claim; or
rescind the request and keep the player on their major league roster, effectively canceling the waiver; or
do nothing and allow the claiming team to assume the player's existing contract, pay a waiver fee to the first team, and place him on their active major league roster
If a player is claimed and the option to rescind is used, this option to rescind a waiver may not be used again for that player in that season. If no team claims a player from waivers in three business days, the player has cleared waivers and may be assigned to a minor league team, traded, or released outright.
The waiver "wire" is a secret within the personnel of the Major League Baseball clubs; no announcement of a waiver is made until a transaction actually occurs. Many players are often quietly waived during the August "waiver-required" trading period to gauge trade interest in a particular player. Usually, when the player is claimed, the waiving team will rescind the waiver to avoid losing the player unless a trade can be worked out with the claiming team.

Not really. Players can still be traded from August 1 to the end of the season, but only if they clear waivers first. Do you understand the waiver process?

A team can't just trade with anyone after the deadline. The player has to pass through waivers so that all the teams have a shot at him. He doesn't have to be traded if claimed, the team can pull him off waivers but then they can't trade him to anyone for 30 days.
