Outfielder Matt Holliday had lunch with his agent, Scott Boras, before Wednesday's game. If Rockies fans had their way, they would be reading over breakfast today that Holliday was discussing a long-term contract. The trend that started with the New York Mets' Jose Reyes last week and continued with teammate David Wright and Cleveland pitcher Cliff Lee has not extended to the Rockies slugger. Colorado has not had any discussions on a multiyear deal with Holliday since he switched to Boras as his representative in December. "That's an offseason issue," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said when asked if he had begun talks with Holliday or Wednesday's starting pitcher Jeff Francis. "We want the players' focus to be on the field."

Rockies fans hated it when Holliday signed with BorAss. The Rockies dont do to much buisness with him. And as good as Atkins has been doing there are a few of us that feel Holliday will be the man traded to make room for Ian Stewart. I would love to see Holliday signed up with a long term but with the history of BorAss and the Rockies I dont see it getting done.

Don't waste time wondering about the Rockies' attempts to sign Matt Holliday to a multiyear deal. It isn't going to happen. And nobody is complaining. Last winter the Rockies felt they were on the verge of getting a four-year deal with a guarantee of $17 million worked out with Holliday, but he decided to change agents, hiring Scott Boras, who also represents Holliday's brother, Josh, an assistant coach at Georgia Tech. Boras' track record is to go on a year-by-year basis with players who aren't free agents, feeling it provides a better opportunity to maximize the income by having the power of arbitration each year. No problem for the Rockies. They have projected budgets for the next three seasons that accommodate arbitration dealings with Holliday.

I can see Holliday being traded over the off season. :(

He has screwed over the Rockies so many times they dont draft guys that have him as a agent and do very little with him.

This is not directed at anyone here specifically, but.... I get sort of weary of hearing people blame sports agents for the financial situations in baseball. I mean, who among us, if given a job, would not do everything we possibly could to maximize our income? What Boras does makes smart business sense, and maximizes the profits for himself and his clients.

Where does the REAL problem lie?? WIth the owners who are so willing to give in to the demands of these agents. If the owners for even just one season were to say "no.. we are not going to give in to [Boras] this offseason..." then the agents would soften on what they do some because it is their livelihood.

The problem lies with the owners... not the agents. They are merely doing their jobs.

you're absolutely right. As long as the owners are willing to pay this ridiculous amount of money, the agents aren't to blame.

I just get kinda annoyed when players and their agents end up arguing over 3 or 4 million, when they're already getting 10 mil. a year. meanwhile here I am getting 9 bucks an hour working a shitty job, going to college

guess I'm just jealous, but when multi-millionaires are arguing about money, it ticks me off a little, and the people arguing about it are the players and their agents, and so my hostility is aimed towards them. But the root of the problem, as you said, is the owners.

couldnt you s ay the same about the owners?? Multi-miiliionaires paying a player $10 million, well, what is another $3million when your payroll is already $100 million?? It goes both ways.

I guess you could see it like that...but the players don't need the extra 3 million...then again neither do the owners.

I'll just blame both :)

You are right Shawn 100%. :D

It just stems for me from Boras being an agent to the young kids that are getting drafted. These kids have to know that he works for them not the other way around. That is the problem the Rockies have had with him in the past and why now they hardly deal with him. He has wrecked one kids baseball career because he keep telling the kid that he could get him more money because he was a pitcher and was drafted by the Rockies.

That is why I am down on Boras. But Holliday is a guy that has been in the league now for a bit and knows what he is getting into with this agent vs the Rockies. I in no way fault the player for he wants to get the money he is worth for his time in sports will be very short.

So I am down on everyone with this. Owners and GM because they wont pay (And the GM is just an idiot to boot), Holliday because he will be leaving, and Boras just because of him being him. :D

I am bummed about the situation, a home grown player who's very good, should be a cornerstone for that organization and because that organization doesn't have a huge media market, that organization can't afford to keep the kid. This happens so much and it's why cities like KC, Pittsburgh, Denver, Miami, Cincinnatti, San Diego and others who can't afford to keep their big stars on a consistent basis.

Boras is easy pickins coz he has certainly been one successful agent out there who's gotten huge, outrageous paydays for his clients. Another one is no longer an agent but instead actually has ownership of a team...Jeff Moorad. Hmmmmm, wonder how the negotiating conversation now would go between him and Boras. :laff:

As much as Holliday kills the Padres, and he does, I still wouldn't want him to sign with another team. He should stay with the Rox and like Shad said, be the cornerstone of the team for years to come. But coulda, woulda, shoulda, is not reality. :(
