View Full Version : Problems in the clubhouse?

I was thinking today that maybe just maybe there are problems in the clubhouse or in the organization which started just before the Tampa Bay series. Look at all the problems they've been going through. Some say it's a huge and disgusting slump but I think that maybe there's something that's not going right in the clubhouse. There could be players not getting along that we don't know about. I know that our pitching has been god-awful but a team like this can't go through such a slump, this bad. I would understand giving up 10+ runs in one game and then bouncing back or even losing the next game, allowing less then 10 runs, but allowing 10+ runs in 3 straight games, there's something wrong. Maybe it's not just the pitchers. I can't re-call the ex-Boston player who said, a couple of years ago, that it's not francona's team but it's the managers up there controling everything.

What pisses me off is that Theo's saying that it's very unlikely that he'll make any moves for pitching. Why go after hitters we have rather than what we need: pitchers?

But what about the Red Sox will be better next season and the season after that by not trading away young talent for rentals this season? I KNOW it's hard! I've been a Met fan for how long? And the Padres? :duh:
I know you guys don't want to talk about the next year and with THOSE ticket prices and parking  the front office should put out a better product. But, the fan at Fenway is not the typical baseball fan who attends games. Most fans from what I've seen are families that attend games. At Fenway, it's corporate ticket sales which is why those tickets are so expensive.
What I love to do is go to Minor League games and watch the youth play. It's so much fun and you really get to know your whole organization.
It's just a thought, might help with these kinds of situations.

I understand your point, and yes i would love to have a younger team knowing that they'll go out there and compete with their herarts each and every day, but when your at a point where your pitching is on the fritz for the past month or more, you must be able to fix the problem; heck find the sollution. I'm not expecting Theo to bring BIG pitchers such as clemens by giving up young youth but I do expect him to get some relievers: experienced or young. He should show us that he's trying to improve this team, but all i see is him kaing terrible trades or pick ups: Riske for Lopez (lefty who's hardly used, what the hell was up with this?), Breslow ( a lefty who was demoted to AAA, why?) and Corey (demoted after one game!!) . A GM of a rich and franchise such as this one should be capable of putting an awesome team all around.

because he has a plan...and he's sticking to that plan. Like Yagsy said...this team will be better next year, with the development of our young pitchers. Paps is tired, Hansen got sent down, hitters are starting to figure out Lester. They all need to adjust, and they will when they get more practice with our pitching coaches and 'tek.
can't win every year, right?

The coprorate are only there #1 caues its the cool thing #2 with the prices they got only they could afford it without taking out a loan.
Families and real fans can't afford to go.
Once again, time and time again, there's nothing out there that would be an improvement from the current players we have the pen. That speaks to how bad relief pitching is around the major league. You either get the veteran that can handle themselves well in the bullpen like Rincon or Villone or you develop young pitchers in your system like the Yankees are doing.
Remember when the Sox beat up Proctor last year? Look at him this year. Big difference. Sox need to get proven relief pitchers, if they're going to sign FA relief pitchers. They're going to have to develop their own and hope they become decent at least.
Bullpen going to suck for the rest of the year unless the current guys start pitching better. Not much else to say at this point. Everyone want to go make a trade when the pen sucks. If you still haven't notice, there's only garbage out there to trade for.

"No one can truly know what ever burns in another man’s soul. But from the outside, at least, the 2006 Red Sox certainly look like they are starting to quit. There is just no way to prove it.
"'He said he couldn’t play. What the (expletive) do you want me to do?' Red Sox manager Terry Francona snapped yesterday morning when asked about Manny Ramirez’ absence from the lineup prior to his lifeless team’s 6-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners.
"'If a guy says he can’t play, he can’t (expletive) play. Go ask him. He said he can’t (expletive) play.'
"And he wasn’t alone.
"So now, with precisely five weeks and a mere 32 games remaining in their season, here is the question we must ask: Do the Red Sox really want to play anymore? Do they want to win?
"Or are they content with just being the transition team that Sox officials labeled them as before the start of this rapidly unraveling season?
"What will it be?
"Red Sox ownership and management have been the target of much displeasure in recent weeks, but it is now time for Red Sox players to take their turn. What happened in Seattle was a joke. From 2003-05, part of the Red Sox’ charm was they continued to play, no matter what, and they found ways to win (last year, especially), despite numerous opportunities to fail.
"Suddenly, with this club, the bodies are dropping like flies. And while it is impossible to discern the severity of many injuries, we all know it is easier to play hurt when a team is winning. When a club starts losing -- and losing badly -- that is when we really get to examine the stuff they are made of. Based on the weekend, you should not be impressed. -- 08.28.06, Tony Massarotti, Boston Herald
Seattle Times columnist: These aren't the Sox we know
"Who were those guys?
"Losing balls in the sun. Kicking it around the infield as if they were Manchester United. Making bad decisions on the bases. Making worse decisions on defense.
"Those weren't the Boston Red Sox who came to town this weekend playing the kind of baseball only Max Patkin could have loved.
"That isn't the team that just two years ago broke the most celebrated curse in sports, winning its first world championship in 86 years.
"That year the Red Sox were the lovable self-proclaimed "idiots," who came from three games behind to win the American League Championship Series from the dreaded Yankees. That year they swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.
"That team had Johnny Damon, Kevin Millar and Bill Mueller. On that team Jason Varitek was healthy. Manny Ramirez and Trot Nixon were in the lineup. Orlando Cabrera was the everyday shortstop and Dave Roberts was the everyday Everyman.
"Curses, look what's happened to the Boston Red Sox." -- 08.28.06, Steve Kelley, Seattle Times

I think the only clubhouse problem is lack of chemistry, as great as guys like Lowell and Gonzalez are, they seem like robots in terms of getting along with people. Pena/Ortiz do little handshakes and dances, Manny and Ortiz too, Wake and Schilling and the rest get along, etc.
The bullpen and injuries are the other problems. Timlin has lost anything he had, Hansen/Delcarmen are just not 100% ready, and rookies get worse in the 2nd half always, Snyder just stinks, Foulke just got back, we have no reliable lefty specialist(thanks for letting Myers go Theo), Lopez just stinks, and we gave up Riske who's done good since leaving. We lost Bard and Meredith to get Doug back, which is fine, but Wake went down and now it's pointless.
This season was full of mistakes left and right, and the injuries don't help.
I like it when writers speculate about clubhouse chemistry as if they are in the clubhouse to experience the chemistry for themselves. I'm not going to speculate on such a matter when no person, but the players know if there's a lack of chemistry with the team.
What people seem to not understand that this team is just not that good. After Manny and Ortiz, this team doesn't have much of an offense. Lowell and A-Gone? A-Gone was hot, cold off. Same applied to Lowell. Crisp getting nothing done, as well as the rest of the order.
We have one of the highest ERA in MLB. I believe Kansas City and Baltimore have a higher team ERA.
I can't blame much of Theo or Tito. They made mistakes? Obviously. No point place blame like everyone else. This team played much better they were. Injuries just made the team that much worse.
We'll see what happen. The race is not quite over yet, but even if this team manage to make it. I don't see them winning.
