DETROIT -- Felipe Alou accepted an offer to spend one year as the bench coach for Detroit Tigers manager Luis Pujols.

The team said Friday the 66-year-old former Montreal manager will join the Tigers in Minnesota later in the day for the start of a three-game series.

The Tigers began the season 0-8, their worst start since 1952.

Tigers president Dave Dombrowski was an Expos executive while Alou was with Montreal. Pujols was on Alou's staff from 1993-00.

Dombrowski appointed Pujols manager for the rest of the season and fired two coaches Tuesday, one day after firing manager Phil Garner and general manager Randy Smith.

Alou, the first Dominican-born manager in the majors, spent the last 27 years with the Expos. He was the manager from 1992 until last season. He was removed as manager nine victories shy of 700 wins.

Alou was the NL Manager of the Year in 1994. He also was a runner-up in the league's Manager of the Year vote in 1996 when the Expos finished second in their division

It took this long for Alou to get a job maybe he can get this team to .500 ;)

Unless Felipe can hit clean-up or pitch a few innings, things aren't going to change quickly.

In spite of what my previous post might imply, I'm glad Alou is here. Hopefully, he will be able to help assess which players are worth keeping and which should be sent out. Dombrowski could use the extra set of eyes.

Alou was originally offered a front office position after his stint as bench coach, but he prefers to be in uniform. I'm kind of hoping he will change his mind about that.

Your right things are not going to change quickly. Alou has to really work to get this team to .500 and I think this team dosen't respect the skipper too much so thats where Alou going to have to work.
