Jason Schmidt has expressed interest in returning to the Giants next season, but Roy Oswalt's contract extension, which he received Tuesday, might have upped the ante for teams willing to bid for Schmidt, a free agent-to-be.

Oswalt's five-year, $73 million contract with the Astros takes effect next season. He could have been a free agent entering 2008 but chose to stay in Houston, where his average annual salary will be $14.6 million.

"It doesn't really matter to me," Schmidt said. "Everything will take care of itself. I'm not worried about it."

Comparing Schmidt, 33, with Oswalt, 29, is somewhat dangerous because Schmidt is 4 1/2 years older, but let the record show that teams have not been afraid to shell out big money on ace pitchers much older than 33.

On the other hand, the comparison might be meaningful because Schmidt's numbers have been so similar to Oswalt's since Oswalt arrived in the majors in 2001.

From 2001 and the present, both pitchers have made 171 starts and topped 1,100 innings. Schmidt is 83-42 with a 3.41 ERA. Oswalt is 93-47 with a 3.09

ERA.
Schmidt has 15 complete games and nine shutouts to Oswalt's 11 and four.

Schmidt has surrendered 918 hits to Oswalt's 1,117.

Schmidt has allowed 92 homers to Oswalt's 95.

While Schmidt has more strikeouts (1,034 to 977), Oswalt has exhibited more control, issuing far fewer walks (255 to 409).

This year, the similarities continue. Both pitchers are 10-8 in 27 outings. Schmidt has a 3.37 ERA, three complete games and one shutout. Oswalt has a 3.25 ERA and two complete games (no shutouts). Again, there's a significant difference in the walks department (Schmidt's 67 are more than twice Oswalt's 30), but Schmidt has 152 Ks to Oswalt's 127.
