Locked in a race for MVP with the Philadelphia Phillies' Ryan Howard, Albert Pujols finds himself at a disadvantage in home runs and RBIs. However, he has no competition in what his home runs have meant.

Pujols' first-inning shot off Washington Nationals starter Pedro Astacio was his 18th to put the Cardinals ahead to stay in a game this season. The figure represents 40.9 percent of his 44 home runs.

Since the statistic was followed in 1957, only Willie Mays has hit more home runs to put his team ahead to stay. Mays hit 19 game-winning home runs for the 1962 San Francisco Giants. Howard has nine game-winning home runs this season.

In the National League, PinnacleSports.com lists Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols as a 5/4 favorite to win his second consecutive MVP award. Following his recent power surge, Philadelphia's Ryan Howard has taken over the Major League lead in HRs and RBIs, but remains a slight MVP underdog at 7/5. Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran has silenced any detractors this season by turning into a solid MVP contender with odds of 5/1.
