Barry Bonds' future in San Francisco is no more clear now than it was six months ago. Giants owner Peter Magowan vowed Sunday to hold off on a decision about bringing back the 42-year-old slugger until after the season, acknowledging it could be a long process before the sides decide whether to stay together for another season or part ways.

Owner Peter Magowan reiterated Sunday that he intends to wait until after the season to announce whether the Giants will make a contract offer to Barry Bonds, who's eligible for free agency and considering retirement. Having adopted this stance early in the year, Magowan termed this view Sunday as "in retrospect, a pretty smart thing to say. Because if people had said to evaluate it when he was hitting .230 and not doing anything, the evaluation would have been very simple for a lot of people." Should the Giants choose to open talks with Bonds, who's 24 home runs short of Hank Aaron's all-time record, they would have a 15-day window of exclusivity for negotiations starting the day after the World Series. After that, the Giants have until Dec. 7 to offer Bonds, 42, salary arbitration; if they don't, they lose all rights to negotiate with him until May 1. Magowan refused to predict how quickly talks might progress if the Giants bargain with Bonds during the exclusivity period.
