RHP Mike Mussina…
Yankees hold a $17 million option on their de facto ace. It's doubtful he'll become available, but he would command $12 million-plus on the market for short years.
LHP Tom Glavine…
The potential 300-game winner has revived his career at 40. If available, he might be had for one year for $6-$7 million, plus an option.
RHP Greg Maddux…
The 40-year-old wasn't keen on being traded to the Cardinals this July and apparently is willing to retire if there is little market for him on the West Coast.
RHP Jason Schmidt…
He's making $10.5 million this season and may expect at least A.J. Burnett money (5 years, $55 million) on the market.
LHP Mark Buehrle…
The ChiSox must decide whether to assume his $9.5 million option for 2007 despite a poor second half. St. Charles native isn't shy about voicing his desire to pitch here.
LHP Barry Zito…
2002 Cy Young Award winner will be looking for Roy Oswalt money ($73 million over five years) after finishing in the top 10 in wins, innings and ERA.
RHP Aaron Sele…
An All-Star with Seattle in 2000, he is now a (very) poor man's Jeff Suppan riding a wave with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
CF Torii Hunter…
A superior defender whose percentages don't excite the "Moneyball" crowd, the
Arkansas native probably will want a raise over this season's $10.75 million.
LF-2B Alfonso Soriano…
If the Nationals don't sign him to an extension, the Cards could approach him with the possibility of returning to second base and doing "damage" as La Russa's No. 2 hitter.
2B Mark Loretta…
His $3.25 million salary more closely fits the Cardinals' range for the position. The Redbirds have liked him for years.
2B Adam Kennedy…
A career .281 hitter traded by the Cardinals as part of Jim Edmonds deal in 2000,
Kennedy led AL second baseman in fielding percentage in '03.
LF Carlos Lee…
The Cardinals couldn't match Rangers' trade with the Milwaukee Brewers but might be able to match money for a consistent run producer. (2006 salary: $8.5 million.)
