Something I found that caught my eye. Add on to these.....
• Arizona gave up two of its top pitching prospects Aug. 7 to acquire right-hander Livan Hernandez from Washington. Fifteen days later, the Diamondbacks, still in the midst of the National League wild-card race, not only shipped veteran outfielder Shawn Green to the Mets but picked up $4.8 million of the $11.5 million Green is guaranteed next season.
• Philadelphia shipped outfielder Bobby Abreu and right-handed pitcher Cory Lidle to the Yankees on July 30, at which time general manager Pat Gillick said it wasn't realistic to think the Phillies could contend before 2008. When the Phillies made a run at the NL wild card, however, Gillick went back to work. First, he added a starting pitcher, left-hander Jamie Moyer, then, after center fielder Aaron Rowand was hurt, Gillick picked up right-handed hitters Jeff Conine and Jose Hernandez.
• Yes, the Florida Marlins are a surprise team in baseball and manager Joe Girardi figures to get strong consideration for NL Manager of the Year. No, that doesn't mean he is secure, even though he has two more years on his contract. Given his relationship with ownership, he could become the first person to be selected Manager of the Year and fired in the same offseason since Baltimore owner Peter Angelos booted Davey Johnson in 1997.
• So what's the big fuss over the potential availability of outfielder Coco Crisp on the free-agent market? He's OK as a defensive center fielder but nothing more, has a .266 average with runners in scoring position and, away from Fenway Park, is hitting .236.
