ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers pulled off the first triple play in the major leagues this season, turning it in the fourth inning of Sunday's game against the Seattle Mariners.
With Ruben Sierra at third and John Olerud at first, Seattle rookie Ron Wright grounded to pitcher Kenny Rogers, who threw to shortstop Alex Rodriguez, forcing Olerud at second.
Rodriguez threw to catcher Bill Haselman and Sierra was retired in a rundown by Rogers. The pitcher then threw to second baseman Michael Young, who tagged out Wright at second base.
It was Texas' fourth triple play, the first since last Aug. 6 at Baltimore. It was the first triple play against Seattle since Rich Amaral hit into one on July 5, 1997, at Anaheim.
