David Eckstein took his most substantial step yet on Friday towards a return to active duty. After sitting out the past four weeks with a strained left oblique muscle, Eckstein was activated from the disabled list.
The shortstop is still probably three days or so from rejoining the Cardinals' starting lineup, but he is available to pinch-hit. Eckstein has been taking live batting practice for three days, and has ramped up his throwing and fielding drills.
"It's looking more and more like he can play against Milwaukee [early next week]," said manager Tony La Russa. "If he keeps progressing."
Aaron Miles has started at shortstop in Eckstein's absence. Miles made two impressive plays in the field on Friday night, but the Cards are eagerly looking forward to the return of their regular shortstop and leadoff man.
Eckstein was noncommittal as to when he might be fully cleared, but acknowledged that he's making steady progress.
"Feeling good," he said.
