The Cardinals didn't know what they were getting when they signed utility player Scott Spiezio to a minor league contract the day position players reported to spring training. By now, they know they found a pivotal part to a restructured bench. Released last season by the Seattle Mariners, Spiezio has resurrected his career by hitting .263 with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs in his first 255 at-bats. His value partially restored, Spiezio is eligible for free agency after this season and says he would like to remain in St. Louis.

''I love it here. I've felt that way since Day One," Spiezio said. "I love this group of guys. It's a super atmosphere to be in."
