Cory Sullivan (103 hits, 100 strikeouts), Ryan Spilborghs and Choo Freeman - the club's primary center fielders - batted a combined .264 with eight home runs. The club is expected to pursue Coco Crisp or Aaron Rowand through trade, with Dave Roberts among several potential free-agent possibilities. Manager Clint Hurdle is seeking more speed, which is why Colorado wants to re-sign second baseman Kaz Matsui.

A Rockies organization defined by stability is expected to have two coaching vacancies today. Manager Clint Hurdle said he would issue a statement on his staff, but multiple sources said first-base coach Dave Collins will pursue other opportunities and hitting instructor Duane Espy won't be asked back. Potential hitting instructor candidates include former big-leaguer Glenallen Hill, a coach for Single-A Modesto; Jose Morales, a former hitting coach with the Giants, Indians and Marlins; and Lamar Johnson, who has worked with the Mariners, Royals and Brewers.

Wow' is the best word to describe Ian Stewart. He has all the tools to become a star. "He is a big, strong kid. He generates a lot of power," slugger Matt Holliday told the media. "You watch him and it's obvious why he was a first-round pick."
Obviously something has to give with Garrett Atkins already playing 3rd for the Rox. This writer has been reporting that it would be very difficult for Stewart to knock Atkins out, and that still may be, but now that I've had a few looks at Stewart, I'm not sure that it won't be long before Atkins is either on the block or something major will be in the works in terms of position shuffling.
Stewart has exciting left-handed power to all fields, especially to the right power ally, which is gold for a Coors Field player. It's possible that he could hit over .300 but most likely will fall just below that mark. He'll most certainly hit over 30 homers a year.
He plays an acceptable defense for now that will get better as he gets more reps. "He's been excellent." reports Clint Hurdle on Stewart's play in the field, "No one says he's not a good third baseman. He's got tremendous poise. He's not awed by anything. He's just very comfortable, excited when he plays and, obviously, you can see what he does when he swings the bat."
This is a few months old so I think Atkins has filled that spot in at third and I think that Holliday might be the guy that they look at moving after next year.

The Rockies finished at the bottom of the NL West, again. They have finished either fourth or fifth in the division the last nine years. They won 76 games, their most since 2000, but also posted their sixth consecutive losing season.
So how do you say thanks to the guys that got you there? Contract extensions!!!:hmm:
And then they come back and say that the fans dont come and watch.

Matsui will be a late off-season decision. The Rockies would like him back. He provided a speed aspect they didn’t have. But his price is going to have to come down significantly, like to about $1.5 million. He is going to have to check out the market and see if that is in line with what other teams are offering, and then decide if he wants to return to his native Japan. Several teams in Japan, including the Giants, have shown interest.

Though the worst team in the National League West, the Rockies' improvement produced their first season-ticket price increase since 2000. Season-ticket holders were informed of the raise through a letter written by team president Keli McGregor. He cited the Rockies' nine-win jump from 2005 and 35 days spent in first place in the division as signs of progress in explaining how a "nominal price increase in most areas" will allow the club to continue to grow.
Wow if the Rockies are going to settle for 35 days in first place and one of those days isnt the last day of the season and still finish last is a reason to raise ticket prices!!!!! And they will wonder again "Why isnt anyone coming to look at the trash we got???":hmm:

The fallout from the managerial carousel could reach the Rockies. If former Marlins boss Joe Girardi receives another manager's job either with the Cubs or Nationals - the Nationals are more likely - Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez might need a new pitching coach. Current Marlins pitching coach Rick Kranitz is expected to follow Girardi, which has led to speculation the Marlins might try to bring back Mark Wiley, a special assistant with the Rockies.

A day after saying he would look to add catching depth, Brewers manager Doug Melvin did just that, claiming 26-year-old JD Closser off waivers from the Colorado Rockies.
Once a top prospect with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the switch-hitting Closser has batted .239 with 10 home runs and 48 RBIs over parts of the past three seasons with Colorado. He entered 2005 as the Rockies' No. 1 catcher, but batted .219 and threw out seven of 60 runners attempting to steal. In 2006, he appeared in 32 Major League games and hit .196.
Closser will turn 27 on Jan. 15. He is a career .283 hitter in 772 Minor League games since 1998, when Arizona took him in the fifth round of the First-Year Player Draft

This time last year in the minds of many, Rockies 2003 first-round draft choice Ian Stewart was on his way and Garrett Atkins needed to prove that he could produce at the Major League level.
To the delight of Rockies fans that were more concerned with the present than the future, Atkins answered the questions to the tune of a .329 batting average, 29 home runs and 117 RBIs.
Now Stewart faces the scrutiny, after he earned Rockies Spring Training MVP honors but followed it up by hitting a less-than-expected .268 with 10 home runs and 71 RBIs at Double-A Tulsa.
What will happen to Stewart since Atkins has proven his worth?
Speculation toward the end of the season had the Rockies preparing to switch Stewart to the outfield, but the subject never was broached directly with Stewart himself.
Rockies player development director Marc Gustafson said on Monday that the Rockies will encourage Stewart to work on outfield play during the winter, but that's not the priority.
"Right now, our priority is his offseason conditioning, so he'll be ready for the [regular] season," Gustafson said. "We want him to have a big year. He did some good things, but with what he did in Spring Training, he had a subpar year and I think Ian would say that he thought he was going to perform better.
"The time will come for him to take some balls in the outfield, but we're going to concentrate on getting him ready for the season first. We're looking at him being our third baseman in Triple-A."
This tells me they are getting ready for life after Matt Holliday. With Baker looking great late this season. Hawpe looking fair but a guy they are going to put time into there isnt to much room for Stewart unless they move out a guy and with Holliday getting on board with Boras he will be the man out.

Speed runs in the family for Eric Young Jr. His father, Eric Sr., has stolen 465 during his 15 seasons in the Major Leagues. This past season, Young followed in his father's footsteps with 87 steals.
Young has three steals in four attempts for Waikiki, and is batting .333 (6-for-18) with three doubles and four RBIs. The 21-year-old New Jersey native had a big game on Oct. 17 against West Oahu, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.

In an effort to increase team speed, the Rockies began their serious run at San Diego Padres free-agent outfielder Dave Roberts on Monday. Roberts fits their need for a center fielder and leadoff hitter with base-stealing ability. And he's open to the Rockies, especially since the Padres haven't initiated talks to bring him back. See that now Dave Roberts is on the Rockie look list. To bad Roberts bats left like Sullivan, I hope the Rockies keep Sullivan for his defense and hope his bat comes around in 2007. Looks like Ray King is gone and the Hung One Kim is testing his value on the free market first before signing with the Rockies.
Jennings, Cook, Francis and Fogg I like. Be good IMO, if the Rockies didn't resign Hung One (he pouts to much ) and get another 5 starter from the FA list or from the farm. I sure liked the looks of that Elbaldo Jiminez in the last game of the season.

DENVER (AP) -- The Colorado Rockies declined to exercise options on relievers Ray King, Jose Mesa and Mike DeJean, saving more than $6 million.
General manager Dan O'Dowd said Wednesday night, however, that the club hopes to pursue new deals with Mesa and DeJean.
If Mesa returns, he'll serve as more of a middle reliever, as he did the final two months of the season, rather than as a right-handed setup man in the eighth inning.
O'Dowd hopes DeJean rebounds from shoulder surgery.
"We're interested in bringing Mike back if he makes progress in his rehab. And it's going very well for him right now, he just hasn't ramped it up yet," O'Dowd said.
DeJean, 36, appeared in just two games last season before being sidelined by a right shoulder injury that required an operation to repair a frayed labrum and rotator cuff in June. He went 1-0, tossing 1 2-3 scoreless innings before getting hurt.
His absence in the bullpen and clubhouse contributed to the club's fall from contention over the second half of the season, O'Dowd suggested.
"Mike is an experienced reliever and as the season went on and we began to struggle, he would have been a nice guy to go to," O'Dowd said.
Although right-handers Ramon Ramirez and Manuel Corpas filled in nicely at times, having DeJean would have kept the Rockies from the kind of six-week slide that turned them into also-rans, O'Dowd said.
With DeJean sidelined, Mesa made a career-high 79 appearances.
"Jose was everything we thought he'd be," O'Dowd said. "It's just that with Mike's injury, we had to use him a lot and that caught up with him in the second half."
Mesa, 40, went 1-5 with a 3.86 ERA. The 18-year major league veteran led the club's relievers in games, losses, innings and holds (19).
Mesa, who made $2,125,000 this season, had a $3 million option with a $515,000 buyout, of which $250,000 already had been advanced to him.
DeJean, who made $1.15 million this season, had a $1.5 million option with a $150,000 buyout. King, 34, who made $2.5 million this year, had a $2.85 million option with a $250,000 buyout.
The Rockies' left-handed setup man, King was 1-4 with a 4.43 ERA in 67 relief appearances. His days in Denver are done.
"We just think Ray's better off moving on somewhere else and he knows that," O'Dowd said.
The Rockies also must decide by Thursday whether to exercise their $2.5 million option on right-hander Byung-Hyun Kim. O'Dowd declined to comment on which way he was leaning.
--------------------------------------
Do hope they can keep Mesa for 2007.

-Jason Jennings' $5.5 million option was exercised Tuesday by the Colorado Rockies.
Jennings went 9-13 last season, when he had had the second-lowest run support in the NL. The Rockies were shut out in four of Jennings' starts and scored just one run in five other losses, and his 3.78 ERA made him just the second Rockies pitcher to post an ERA below 4.00
Jennings made $4.4 million last season, part of a $7 million, two-year deal he signed in 2004. His buyout would have been $100,000.
Also Tuesday, the Rockies promoted Alan Cockrell to hitting coach and Glenallen Hill to first base coach. Cockrell, 43, served as the team's hitting coach for five months in 2002 after Clint Hurdle was promoted to manager, then spent the last four season as hitting coach at Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Hill, 41, who played in the major leagues for 13 seasons, was the hitting coach at the Rockies High-A affiliate for the last three years and served as manager at Modesto for the final three months of last season after Chad Kreuter became head baseball coach at Southern Cal.

Kaz Matsui's speed will influence how the Rockies address filling their need in center field, with their focus shifting to trade targets such as Houston's Chris Burke. A seller's market makes them longshots to land free agents Dave Roberts and Jay Payton. Cash is the operative word at this event, where agents are smiling and mini-crabcakes are going for 12 bucks a pop. That explains why the Rockies will make a run at the cost-efficient Burke and inquire about Philadelphia's Aaron Rowand. Jason Jennings has reached a critical juncture in his Rockies career. He's a free agent at season's end, and the team has offered him a two-year deal with a club option averaging approximately $7 million per season. Their aggressiveness grabbed Jennings' attention at a time when the Rockies acknowledge receiving inquiries about his availability in a trade. Colorado is looking to work out an extension or at least consider moving him to address multiple needs. From his offseason home in Texas, Jennings said Tuesday he's not bothered by the uncertainty. He has dealt with trade rumors every year - "It's part of the business," Jennings said, save for last season when he posted personal bests in ERA (3.78) and innings pitched (212). "Their budget is their budget. I understand that. The Rockies have made a good offer, and (agent) Casey (Close) was going to get back to them," Jennings said. "There's no rush. I am always willing to listen and will keep weighing my options." The Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Giants and Padres are among the teams who have expressed interest in Jennings over the past few years. The Twins are also looking to fill multiple holes in their rotation.
If the Rockies trade Jennings they will lose what little fan base they have left. And I would hope they lose every game until they get rid of O'Drool and Hurdle.

That's good, since the Rockies are unlikely to be able to offer enough to grab Dave Roberts, who stole 49 bases for the Padres last season. All will command a huge commitment - talks with Atkins are in the infancy stages - and a lack of a movement on a Jennings deal could influence his future with the club at next week's winter meetings.

The club, for now, is holding on to Jason Jennings - add the Cardinals to the teams that have expressed interest - and has Aaron Cook, Jeff Francis and Byung-Hyun Kim under contract. Josh Fogg is arbitration eligible. The Rockies are expected to begin negotiations with Fogg next week. They must offer him a contract by Dec. 12 or make him a free agent.

Being my post from yesterday is gone and my rant about the Rockies better not trade Jennings I get to read better news......
Casual interest in Jason Jennings has graduated to concrete proposals with the Rockies considering a three-way trade with the Cubs and Pirates involving young pitchers and outfielders Jacque Jones and Brad Hawpe. The Cubs offered Jones, who formally requested a trade at season's end, and pitcher Carlos Marmol or Angel Guzman for the Rockies' opening-day starter. Under one scenario, the Rockies, who prefer Marmol, would keep Jones and ship Hawpe to the Pirates for starter Paul Maholm. ... Jennings' situation remains fluid. The Astros - Taylor Buchholz likely would be requested by the Rockies, with outfielder Chris Burke unavailable - and Rangers (reliever C.J. Wilson is attractive) are in the mix.
Wow I really want to throw down the biggest cussing fit I can think of by reading this bull crap.. :bonehead

The Astros remain in talks with the Colorado Rockies for Jason Jennings. They also have inquired about San Diego Padres ace righthander Jake Peavy, who would likely come at a higher price, considering his age and relatively cheap contract for a player of his ability. To avoid tampering charges by discussing interest in players under contract with other teams, GM Tim Purpura declined to publicly comment on the Astros' quest for Jennings and Peavy. Nonetheless, a top major league official with knowledge of those talks assured the Chronicle that the Astros are interested in Jennings and Peavy.

The Twins are expected to meet with the Colorado Rockies during the winter meetings this week about righthander Jason Jennings. Jennings, 28, was only 9-13 for the Rockies last season, but his 3.78 ERA was the best of his career. Jennings, the 2002 NL rookie of the year, has pitched at least 181 innings in four of the past five seasons, which would satisfy the Twins' needs for a durable No. 2 starter. His availability is increasing because the Rockies aren't making progress in signing him to a contract extension. "All I keep saying," Twins General Manager Terry Ryan said, "is that I'm looking for starting pitching." ... Colorado needs bullpen help and a young starting pitcher in return. The Twins could deal either righthander Juan Rincon or righthander Jesse Crain (who's from Colorado) and throw in a nearly ready prospect, such as Scott Baker or Glen Perkins. The Rockies know the Twins don't want to trade righthanders Matt Garza or Boof Bonser.

As trade talks stalled for Jason Jennings, the Rockies inched forward on their contract proposal to the right-hander. Colorado has offered Jennings a three-year, $24 million contract with a fourth-year club option, according to a team source. That represents a $2.5 million increase from the Rockies' previous bid and the potential for an extra season. The contract is nearly identical to what free agent Adam Eaton landed from the Philadelphia Phillies last week, but doesn't appear likely to bridge the gap. Jennings said he's "open-minded" to committing long-term to the Rockies, but also values the chance to test free agency after next season. ... The Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins have discussed trading for Jennings, but talks cooled.

The Angels inquired about trading for first baseman Todd Helton, according to a Rockies' source with direct knowledge of the discussions. By Wednesday night, the Angels' interest had faded because of concerns about Helton's age, previous back injury and declining performance. Helton, 33, has six years and $90.1 million remaining on his contract and hasn't eclipsed 30 home runs since 2004. The source characterized the talks as general in nature. He said the Angels asked about a handful of players, including Garrett Atkins. After being told Atkins wasn't available, the Angels brought up Helton. There was no exchanging of names or proposals. Any trade for Helton would be complicated because of his contract - the Rockies would have to eat a healthy portion to facilitate a deal - and a complete no-trade clause. The Rockies have said publicly they expect Helton to rebound after hitting .301 with 15 home runs and 81 RBIs last season.

The Cardinals, Rangers and Brewers have explored deals for Rockies SS Clint Barmes, with Milwaukee offering center fielder Brady Clark. Even with top prospect Troy Tulowitzki expected to start at shortstop, Colorado isn't motivated to move Barmes. The Rockies have interest in Clark, but his salary is problematic - they would like the Brewers to eat $2 million of his $3.8 million contract - and they are not sure he could outperform Barmes if they try him in center field. "Teams just want us to give Clint away. We think he can still help us," general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "He's not the first player to go through a sophomore slump."

He went 11-9 with a 5.49 ERA last season, pitching 172 innings in 31 starts and made $1.05 million, including $200,000 in incentives. According to sources close to the negotiations, the Rockies are believed to have offered Fogg about $2.5 million next season but have not struck a deal because of the rising market.
Look at that rotation and it looks good. It is what keep the Rockies in the race for the first half of the year and will help them out again this year.
Take JJ off that list and you got to fill one more slot with a guy and the Rockies will fill it with a guy along the Kim side. So instead of a great chance to win with the first 3 and if you get one out of the back two great it will be lucky to win 2 out of 5 with those starters. :hmm:

ACK!!! Just looked at Garcia's stats.
Not to good. .241 ba/ .279 obp and a .424 slg avg. in 10 years.
Better stick to jumping over bullpen fences and doing battle with the Red Sox.

Karim Garcia has dropped 20 pounds, regained his power and will decide today whether to sign a minor-league deal with the Rockies or the Philadelphia Phillies, according to his agent. "The situations are very similar," said Bobby Barrett, Garcia's representative. "I expect him to choose (today)." ... Eager for a fresh start, Garcia spent the past two seasons in Japan, hitting .281 with 34 home runs in 663 at-bats. He is the only player in Japanese history to hit three home runs in back-to-back games.

Darin Erstad said six teams have expressed serious interest in signing him, either as a left fielder, center fielder or utility player. Though he declined to name the teams, the Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies and Seattle Mariners are believed to be among them. Erstad, 32, didn't rule out a return to the Angels, who probably would be interested in signing him to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The Orioles, whose rotation is set, have been listening to inquiries about the 31-year-old pitcher throughout the offseason, but trade talks have become more serious this week according to a club source, and it appears that a decision will be made on Rodrigo Lopez's future soon, perhaps as early as this weekend. The Colorado Rockies have been the most aggressive suitor for Lopez, and the two teams have exchanged trade proposals, the source said. The San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers also have expressed interest in Lopez, as have the New York Mets and Seattle Mariners, though the interest of the latter two teams is tepid at best, according to one team source.

While the Rockies continue pursuing a trade for Baltimore's Rodrigo Lopez, they increased their interest in starter Brian Lawrence on Thursday, making their first contract offer. Colorado remains a favorite, given Lawrence's desire to pitch in the National League West. The Padres, Mariners and Pirates also have submitted proposals, but no team has seen Lawrence throw more than the Rockies as he attempts to recover from shoulder surgery. The Padres and Rockies have offered minor-league deals.

John Mabry agreed Monday to a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies, who invited the utilityman to spring training.
The 36-year-old hit .205 in 210 at-bats over 107 games for the Chicago Cubs last season, seeing time at first base, third base, left field and right field.

Rockies owner Charlie Monfort indicated the organization remains open to trading Todd Helton if it makes the team better. ... Monfort conceded it's "not wise" to allocate so much money to one player. Helton will make $16.6 million of the team's projected $55 million payroll this season. A desire to spread out dollars and fill multiple needs - the club was seeking to acquire infielder Erick Aybar, catcher Jeff Mathis and first baseman Casey Kotchman - motivated the Rockies' trade discussions with the Angels at the winter meetings. ... "The Anaheim thing was exploratory, but the fact that we are exploring how to always make the team better and he's involved in it, that shouldn't shock anybody and shouldn't shock Todd. But from everyone I have talked to, he's hungry and thinks that this is a team that can be successful, so hopefully he will have a breakout season."

Rockies owner Charlie Monfort wants - at minimum - a .500 record this season. It has long been assumed that if the Rockies don't post a winning season, general manager Dan O'Dowd and manager Clint Hurdle could lose their jobs. Monfort said Monday, however, that their futures aren't necessarily linked. "I see Dan and Clint's situation as totally different," Monfort said. "It's just that their contracts are coming up at the same time, and they've worked together so people think they are hooked at the hip. That's not true."

It's increasingly hard to envision any scenario in which it's comfortable for Todd Helton and the Rockies to remain together. The team maintains a genuine fondness for everything Helton has done and respects all he has meant to baseball in Colorado. Nobody has spent longer hours sweating in the sun at Coors Field or wanted the Rockies to win more than Helton. But this relationship between the 33-year-old first baseman and a ballclub operating on a parsimonious budget has become so awkward that it's a messy divorce waiting to happen. No team would trade for Helton now unless the Rockies agreed to eat a huge part of his salary.

Todd Helton's goal for the past several seasons has been to finish his career where it began - with the Rockies. That's still the case. Even in 2001, when he signed a nine-year contract extension that guaranteed him $141.5 million from 2003 through 2011, a key factor was the no-trade clause. The first baseman gave the Rockies a window of opportunity to trade him the past week, but after talks with the Red Sox broke off, Helton said Tuesday he is eager to get on with his ultimate goal - playing for a winning team and wearing a Rockies uniform while he does it. "I'm happy to be here," he said. "I gave them a chance to get out of it if they wanted, and it didn't happen. So it's time to go about business."

Failing to move a large chunk of Todd Helton's contract to Boston - as unpopular as it may have been - leaves the Rockies in a difficult position as they try to retain young talent such as pitcher Aaron Cook, closer Brian Fuentes and, most notably, all-star outfielder Matt Holliday beyond this year. Unless, that is, ownership greatly expands payroll, which it has shown no desire to do. "It makes it tough. But who knows what's going to happen?" owner Charlie Monfort said. "People are already saying that we are not staying with homegrown guys (because of the Jason Jennings trade). But when we say we are going to stick with them, that doesn't mean through thick and thin for 12 to 14 years. "That means you keep them while you can go through arbitration and hope that you have somebody coming behind them to take their place because, quite frankly, in this market we can't afford that. If people want to say that we are a minor-league team for the Yankees and somebody is going to pick Matt off for $14 (million) a year (as a free agent), so be it."

That's the growing concern among Rockies fans regarding Matt Holliday, who hit .326 with 34 home runs and 114 RBIs last season. If the Rockies want to talk about a multiyear contract, Holliday said he'll listen, but the Rockies don't have to do anything. There have been no discussions about a multiyear contract since Holliday hired agent Scott Boras 14 months ago. Holliday takes umbrage with those who say his exit is inevitable because of Boras. "It's ridiculous. They look at Scott and say he's bad for baseball. But he's great at what he does and he works for me," Holliday said. "It will ultimately be my decision."

Todd Helton has told the Rockies he is prepared to veto all future trades for the next five years. O'Dowd said he was "never overly optimistic that the Red Sox deal was going to get done" because neither side could find a match on a young prospect. The crossroads with the Rockies and Helton could come at this time next year, when Triple-A corner fielders Joe Koshansky and Ian Stewart should be ready for big-league jobs.

With Aaron Cook, Jeff Francis and Rodrigo Lopez considered locks, Josh Fogg, Byung-Hyun Kim, Jason Hirsh, Taylor Buchholz, Brian Lawrence and Oscar Rivera are in the mix for the final two rotation spots. Rockies 1B Todd Helton said he is happy to remain in Colorado but admits he was intrigued about playing in Boston. "I love everything about Colorado," he said. "But there is another aspect to this. Sometimes a fresh start can get some blood pumping for you again. Who was it that said, 'If you stay in one place for 10 years, you've stayed there long enough?' There is a lot of truth to that. Maybe there were some people getting sick of me within the Rockies, and vice versa." Helton, who has veto power over any trade, said he fully expects to finish this season with the Rockies. He said he'd reject any trade once this season begins. Beyond that, he isn't sure what his future with the Rockies holds
After a wacky year for him last year with that gut problem I look forward to seeing him getting it going again. I would like to see Hurdle stick him in the number 2 spot where he can just hit. Let him do what he does best and that is hit doubles.

The one deal that wouldn't have cost a front-line pitcher fell apart when Colorado first baseman Todd Helton refused to waive his no-trade clause to come to Anaheim.
Todd knows he can be an ass to managment and not get the backlash of the fans. Todd will be here for a couple of more years. I hope to see the Rockies come back to power with a good GM and manager.

The Las Vegas Hilton, owner of the world's largest sports book, released its over/under baseball numbers this week and put the Rockies at 74½ wins, last in the National League West. Rockies owner Charlie Monfort has earmarked 81 wins this season as his goal, raising expectations for O'Dowd and Hurdle, who are in the final year of their contracts. "If I was a betting man, I would definitely take the over," Rockies all-star outfielder Matt Holliday said. How many games will the Rockies win? "Substantially more than 74," Holliday said.
