The Astros are expected to make a big push for free-agent slugger Carlos Lee because they need a big righthanded bat in the middle of their lineup.

If they don't sign him, though, Burrell could be a cheaper alternative since the Phillies could be expected to pick up a hefty chunk of his salary.

Hey Astros fans :D

Do you think the Astros will persue Clemens for another year? How about Pettite? IMO, I think they should try and resign one of them and then go after another big hitter to put behind Berkman. Carlos Lee behind Berkman? He's a pretty consistant power hitter.....I am pretty sure Berkman's numbers would go through the roof.

I'm not too keen on either Lee or Burrell.

We need to find out, and soon, what Roger and Andy want to do. No later than Thanksgiving, those guys either need to be signed or let 'em go do whatever and wherever. Also need to figure out what to do with Huff, whether or not we will pursue him. I'm not impressed by his defense, to tell you the truth. And then we need to test the trade waters with Ensberg, Lane and Lidge.

I think Lee would be a great pick up for Houston. I would try and keep Pettitte too. Clemens makes you jump through too many hoops to play and soon age will catch up to him.

I agree with my Reds buddy that Lee would be a good addition.. Rather have him over Burrell myself...

I agree, Lee over Burrell, but I'd rather not have either. We had Lee last year, went by the name Morgan Ensberg and supplied the right-handed power that everyone says Houston really needs now.

Don't know exactly how much Lee is going to ask for, but I have serious doubts we'd ever get the production we were paying for in return. I'd rather figure out if Ensberg could be fixed, if Lidge could be fixed, and if Roger and Andy were going to return before I started looking at spending really big bucks on a guy like Lee. I don't see one free agent outfielder on the market this winter that is worth the 'Carlos Beltran money' they are going to want to start negotiations at.

Houston scored more runs in 2006 than in 2005, even without the production we were expecting from Ensberg and Lane going into the season. Everyone has this hard-on to want to improve the Astros' batting order, yet not one person seems to want to give a look-see at the fact that the pitching staff gave up over 100 runs MORE in 2006 than in 2005. Blowing the bankroll on a bat like Lee and not addressing the pitching concerns FIRST & FOREMOST would be a huge mistake in my mind.

No disrespect my friend but are you really comparing Lee to Ensberg?

You may not want to spend the money on Lee, which I could accept but in no way is he the same player as Ensberg...

Ensberg has had maybe 1 or 2 good seasons while Lee has been doing it and doing it a lot better for 6 years or so....

Wait, we are talking about Carlos and not Travis right?

No, I'm not really comparing Carlos Lee to Morgan Ensberg. Or even to Morgan Fairchild ;)

What I was saying was that most people thought Houston had a big right-handed bat for the middle of the lineup with Ensberg before this season started. And if they front office and Garner think he will rebound and be the player he was in 2005, we will add a right-handed bat for cheaper by keeping Ensberg at third than we would if we got into a bidding war for Lee's services in the outfield.

And I think there are some other decisions that have to be made before we just run out willy-nilly and say let's sign this guy or let's sign that guy. We can't keep Ensberg, Lamb and Huff, and sign Lee without doing something about the pitching. Houston has historically been a far more successful team when it concentrates more on pitching and defense.

I can see why you would say that, Ray. At Wrigley, 63 AB, 7 HR and a .714 slugging.

What's the poop on Aramis Ramirez, Rockin' Ray? He's the guy that, if Houston could get a decent arm, either a #4 starter type or good setup man, for Ensberg & Lane, Ramirez is a guy I'd like the Astros to consider pursuing.

hendry will probably try to resign ramirez to a long term contract again. he can opt out of a 23 million 2 year deal and with the numbers he put up and the lack of good free agents at 3rd, he could probably parlay that into Derrek Lee money. I expect him back next year, but at a high cost. The new Prez says hendry should be able to expect to have a $100M budget to work with (it was like 92 this year).

My deal is if we trade Lidge, I want it to be to an AL Club. I think he's a guy that can bring a good return to Houston right now. I hate trading him. Man, I was at that game that Pujols crushed the pitch. The only person besides myself that I felt sorry for was Lidge. But I think he's a guy the club should at least explore.

I'm fed up with Ensberg. Good dude, probably the strongest guy on the team. But he needs to be replaced.
