Boston's tied with Montreal 2-2 right now. The Isles are beating the Maple Leafs 1-0, and Chicago is tied with St. Louis 1-1. Colorado plays in about an hour I believe.

The Islanders and Maple Leafs should be the best series in the east; Chicago and St. Louis looks to be the best in the west.

Peter the Great is definitly in the house, along with Sakic and company...Colorado leads series 2-0

I'm kinda likin' that Detroit/Vancouver series - the octopi are still in their hiding places...they may not get any ice time at all...

Bill, the prozac and alcohol sales are way up in Hockeytown. Depression and fear are rampant. It's not pretty. Game 3 is tomorrow and all the pressure is obviously on Detroit's back. I just don't know if they can climb back into this series.

Glad to hear Forsberg is back. Avs need him, the league needs him.

My Islanders are getting blasted by the Leafs. I was hoping for revenge for 1978, I'm apparently going to be disappointed. Let's see, if the Isles and Wings are gone in round one, who do I root for in round two?

That's funny, Trots! The Prozac is always flowing here...too many soccer moms! (Exceded in sales only by Ritalin...)

Don't know about the Islanders yet, but the octopi have made an impressive thwack onto the ice. Vancouver's playing their best hockey right now...the Wings will have to keep their energy level up.

It's amazing how well Peter the Great is playing now, after his long layoff and a couple of ankle surgeries. Sakic has done it without him before, but together they make other teams really work. I think the Av's will make it to the second round, though.

It is indeed a good time to be a sports fan in Beantown, PP! Enjoy it as long as you can!

Bill, I think these playoffs are officially interesting now. We've got the Kings trying to push your Avs, the Canucks GM is barking about the referees while his team has coughed up three in a row, the B's and Habs series is about to get very ugly after last night's hit, the Isles and Leafs are chirping at each other with their series tied (I now hate the Leafs as much as I did when the bounced the Isles in '78).

Anyone else heard the 'nucks Brian Burke get interveiwed? What a clown he is coming off as. He got all defensive during a CBC interview because he felt it was too "negative", like the CANADIAN Broadacsting Company isn't hoping for a Vancouver win, then says he doesn't want to make the officiating an issue, then rips the league and the refs for the next three games. I know I'm getting the pro-Detroit spin, but I've seen Burke before and this isn't out of character for him.

I still haven't seen "The Hit" from last night's Bruins/Canadiens game. How bad is it? Princess, what's the Boston view? Regardless, the next game is going to be good tv. The Canadiens coach yelled something like "You're Dead" to the B's bench and told the media that basically "if they are going to come after us, we are going after them".

The Leafs spent all Thursday night trying to be the Flyers of the mid-70's and spent lots of time talking trash and trying to start fights. Darcy Tucker is a tough player, but this is the post-season and I can't stand the guy anymore. Osgood has been his usual playoff scary. Way too many soft goals. Maybe the Isles can sign Cujo after the season. I hear he's a free agent.

In addition, Peca is giving the media tons of bulletin board stuff, too. He said things like "maybe the Leafs can't play hockey so they hope to win the fights", "having me and Tucker in the penalty box only hurts my team", "maybe Cujo knows this will be his last game as a Leaf and he will tense up a little". Ooohhh, how I hope the Isles win this series. With these three series, the USA vs. Canada hockey rivalry isn't going to die down any.

Anyone in CO. excited about the Avs/Kings, yet, Bill? Btw, if I had to deal with all those soccer moms, I might be asking for Ritalin, too.

Let me preface by saying how sad I am, and I hope Zednik recovers quickly, BUT The Habs have been getting away with playing very DIRTY HOCKEY all series long. The refs did NOTHING.

4 Bruins were punched in the face last night, NOT DURING FIGHTS, but by trying to protect DaFoe who was getting pushed out of the net REPEATEDLY!

Joe Thonton got HIGH STICKED badly, and it WASN'T CALLED UNTIL JOE SPIT HIS TOOTH OUT AT THE REF!!!!

The hit was in OPEN ICE, there was NO intent to hospitalize Zednik. Kyle was just trying to keep Zednik away from the break away, when ZEDNIK went to the OUTSIDE AND PUT HIS HEAD DOWN! That's why he took the blow to the head. He is so quick, he just slammed into Kyle's shoulder head on. A tragedy, yes, but there was certainly no intention to seriously harm Zednik.

This is gonna get UGLY, and I blame the refs. :pissed:

Sorry Zednik.:crying2:

Actually said to Bill Guerin, we are going TO KILL YOU. True story. The Habs have called up some 6' 9" MONSTER for tomorrow's game. On a sad side note- Boston media in Montreal had to call the police after witnessing CHILD Bruins fans getting pummelled in the stands. IT WAS UGLY.

But, like you said Trots, It's Bruins/Habs, what do you expect?

I keep getting distracted here - I've got one eye on the NY/Toronto game, and I'm listening to the radio for news on the Rockies impending blowup. If the Islanders and Leafs play like they did in that third period last game, this will be good...NY down 2-1 late in first period...

There's really not a lot of buzz around here about the Avs...except for the few that pay attention to collegiate hockey, there's not a lot of knowledgable fans here. They fill up the Pepsi Center (aka 'The Can'), but it's more of a schmoozing, of sorts...lots of cell phones and corporate partying. All you hear around hear is football, 24/7. This Kings' club is better than last year's, though, and they took the Avs to game 7 last year.

It is definitely getting interesting, though. There's a few teams that didn't make the playoffs that a lot of people follow (like Pittsburgh, Rangers and Edmonton), and a few that I don't think anyone follows that got in, like the Avs (maybe they still have some fans in Quebec), San Jose and Phoenix. That's probably why it seems like less people are following the playoffs, to me, anyway.

I have to work tomorrow, so I won't see the Boston/Hab game. Maybe PP will post an update? :)

Hopefully, I will be able to catch the ends of the Avs/Kings and the Wings/'Canucks.

Go Avalanche!

Isles now down 4-1 and both Kenny Jonsson and Micheal Peca are out of the game. It's been a very chippy game. That was predictable. It won't get any better in Game Six back on LI, either.

My pal, Darcy Tucker knocked Peca out of the game. It was a clean hit, but given the choice to go high or go low, Tucker went low and Peca needed help to get off the ice. I can't imagine the Isles winning the series without both Jonsson, probably their best D-man, and Peca, their captain and leader. It's just like 1978 all over again. I hate the @#$%^&* Leafs.

Bill, Red Wing crowds aren't much different than Avs crowds, apparently. Although, there is a loyal fan base here, most of whom are getting priced out of The Joe. It was the same way with the Pistons when the were winning championships, too. It becomes the trendy thing to do. I would think that we have lots more NHL fans in general around here, though. Our proximity to Canada is a major factor, I'm sure.

I have to admit, I have not watched a single playoff game this season. The biggest reason being that I don't have cable, but I think it goes beyond that. NHL hockey just seems to be, for the most part, extremely boring this season. There is something about the fact that there is an average of only 4.53 goals per game being scored and that their is no scoring going on whatsoever anywhere. Heck, the Flyers were shutout in like 3 straight games. Sorry, but to me, that's just boring hockey. But, then again, I grew up watching hockey in the Lemieux/Jagr/Recchi/Stevens era here in Pittsburgh.

GiveHyzduashot

Yeah, and Chicago went three games without scoring too.

I'll watch the semifinals frequently and some quarterfinal games. But I have no desire to watch a 2-1 games when I haven't followed either team all season and never will, either. 2-1 Pittsburgh game I would watch, but not some 2-1 or 1-0 game.

A quiet game, PP? that's kinda' surprising, considering the game before. I'm glad cooler heads prevailed - I was expecting something very different. Sorry your Bruins lost, though. But like you say - a no-no makes up for a lot!

It looks as if the Bruins, Islanders and Avs are now in must-win situations. The Wings are up by 2 in the third - the Canucks keep trying to get back in the game, doesn't look like they'll make it...a pretty good come-back on the Wings part.

The Bruins and Avs have a fairly good chance to win their next game, but I agree with Trots on the Islanders. Without those two guys, it will be more than difficult.

I don't really mind the low scoring games, but they can be a little boring. Maybe they should make the nets a little bigger? After these guys get all of their pads and masks and stuff on, there isn't a lot of room to poke a puck...

Vancouver just scored an empty-netter - 6-4 Wings - McCarty in the box - a 6-on-4 for Vancouver with 2:34 to go...

RockieBill
04-27-2002, 10:03 PM
Well, the Canucks gave it a good try, but no game 7 for this series. Wings win 6-4. Crawford's done a pretty good job up there - that team has improved immensely.

That no call against Vancouver was horrible. It was when Lidstrom scored the third goal. At least three different times play should have been stopped.

04-28-2002, 09:13 PM
I haven't watched much of the playoffs beyond the Isles/Leafs and Wings/Canucks. Of course, I have an interest in one of the teams in each. That's part of the problem the NHL faces. It's so regional, that unless your team is in it, you don't watch. I always intend to watch the Finals, especially a potential Cup clinching game, regardless of the opponents. However, to say I'm excited about the Coyotes and Sharks, under any circumstances, is incorrect.

I wouldn't care much more about the other games if they were scoring like crazy, either. That to me is like watching dunks or homers all night. The more it happens, the less value it has. In the end, I think the NHL will try to get more goals scored next year, trying to lure the casual fans and increase their tv audience. They'll probably remove the red line. Getting rid of tv timeouts would help, too.

GiveHyzduashot
04-28-2002, 09:25 PM
I definitely do not want to see a 6-4 hockey game every night. That's bad for the sport.

I think 6 total goals a game is ideal. It's enough you won't fall asleep watching.

Montreal 2 Boston 1.

In the East, the 1 and 2 seeds have gone out already and the third seed is horrible.

It's definitely looking like the winner of the Toronto/Islanders series will advance out of the east. I can see Montreal giving one of those teams trouble, but Carolina and Ottawa will be golfing by next week.

I'll go out on a limb here and say they shouldn't have too tough a time against the Sharks, though. I'm secretly hoping the Wings and Avs make it to play each other. My poor Isles lost. :crying2: We'll never know how the series might have turned out if both teams had been at full strength. Seeing Peca in the luxury box with Mr. Wang and Mr. Kumar was a killer. I nearly cried.

Some stupid Ranger fan (redundant, yes, I know) called up a local sports talk station and said that the violence in this series was payback for the way the Isles played in the 80s.

Huh? Most of the guys on both teams were toddlers back then. Does this jackass really think the future Maple Leafs have had revenge on their minds for 20 years?

LF, I am still depressed about our Isles. I know they had a great, more like unbelievable, season, but to end it this way is still a let down. I doubt the Leafs were thinking about payback for the 80's, but I was thinking payback for '78. Now, I want payback for '78 and '02.

I thought our guys showed a great deal of class shaking hands at the end. No way I would have. Way too much smack, way too many cheap hits. Peca may not even be ready for the start of next season. This was series was personal.

Trots, you're an Isles fan? I knew I liked you! I've been an Islanders fan from Day 1. Our family knows the son of one of the original part owners. My father never cared for hockey (The man comes from Michigan and he doesn't like hockey. Go figure!), so we never had the opportunity to really follow it until the Isles came along. They reminded us of our Mets -- blue and orange and godawful. We fell in love with them instantly. And, just as with the Mets, they won their first championship in record time.

But I digress.

The latest on Peca is that it's looking as if he might not be back until Christmas.

Yep, I'm an Islanders fan. Where do you think the "Trots" came from? My all-time favorite player, Bryan Trottier. (He's Steve Yzerman's favorite, too. That's why he wears number 19. That's tonight's hockey trivia segment.)

I'll be mad about Tucker's hit, Corson's mouth (before Cairns' fist closed it), the Leafs overall cheap play and mostly the series loss for a while. My wife is still amazed at how upset I am about the 1978 debacle against TOR, so it may be a good long while.

Trots for Trottier? Kewl! I worshipped him and Bossy back in the glory days. I went to an Isles/Wild game back in March and they gave us Bobby Nystrom bobbleheads. That brought back memories, lemme tell ya! :)

The majority of the media are actually saying nice things about the Isles and their early exit from the playoffs. I'm actually surprised, because they are usually brutal.

BTW, Peca tore his ACL and sprained his MCL because of a cheap shot by that thug Darcy Tucker. Something tells me that the Leafs/Isles games in the 02/03 season will be NASTY.

Cook: Francis makes it finer in Carolina

Friday, May 03, 2002

This might be better than his 514 goals, his 1,187 assists and his No. 5 ranking on the NHL's all-time scoring list, even more impressive than his two championships with the Penguins and his place with Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr on what surely was the greatest line in hockey history.

Ron Francis has 'em thinking Stanley Cup in North Carolina.

Leading off our sports report today are the Carolina Hurricanes, who will try to get the jump on the Montreal Canadiens at home tonight in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinal ...

In other sports news, Tony Stewart will be trying to defend his Pontiac Excitement 400 title tomorrow night when NASCAR rolls into Richmond International Speedway ...

Who knew?

"What we've been able to accomplish down here is incredible," Francis was saying this week. "When we came home after beating New Jersey Saturday, 500 people were waiting at the airport. It's been building every day since then. No matter where you go, people are talking about the Hurricanes."

The chance to help establish a hockey franchise in a Southern market where they know everything about Jeff Gordon's No. 24 Chevy but couldn't explain icing if you grabbed a shotgun from the pickup truck and held it to their head isn't the main reason Francis signed as a free agent with the Hurricanes after the '98 season, the last of his 7 1/2 years with the Penguins. "I hate it when guys say it's not about the money. The money always has a lot to do with it." But as much as Francis has enjoyed cashing more than $20 million in paychecks the past four years, he's almost as thrilled by his team's success.

The Hurricanes averaged 15,509 in attendance this season, up from 8,188 in Francis' first year in Carolina. They won their second division title in his four seasons and qualified for the playoffs for the third time. They took a huge step last week by winning their first postseason series, eliminating the two-time defending conference champion New Jersey Devils in six games.

Somehow, it seems appropriate Francis scored the only goal in the clinching Game 6 win. All over Carolina, he's known as "Ronnie Franchise." It especially seems appropriate he beat Devils defenseman Scott Stevens to the net for the easy tap-in of a Jaroslav Svoboda pass. A year earlier, Stevens had knocked him out of their first-round playoff series with a brutal Game 3 hit, and the Hurricanes lost to the Devils in six.

This Francis goal was sweet payback.

"Sitting beside Ronnie, you could feel the tension," Carolina forward Martin Gelinas told the Raleigh News and Observer. "He wants to make it happen. He walked into this room and the guys almost gave him a standing ovation."

Francis will tell you that goal was as meaningful as any he has scored. He went to the playoffs every season with the Penguins but had almost forgotten how terrific it is to win a series. His teams hadn't won one since the '96 Penguins beat the New York Rangers in the conference semifinal.

We'll never know how many more series or even championships the Penguins would have won if they hadn't allowed Francis to walk. It's not like they didn't want him. "He's one of the greatest leaders I've ever seen," General Manager Craig Patrick said at the time. But the franchise was headed for bankruptcy. It couldn't afford to match Carolina's big offer, especially not to a player who was 35.

What's amazing is Francis still is going strong at 39, so strong that the Hurricanes are expected to negotiate another multiyear contract with him after the season. He led the team on the ice with 27 goals and 77 points this season and off the ice with his leadership. Carolina officials insist he deserves consideration for the Hart Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable Player.

"You don't expect to hear those kinds of things at my age," Francis said.

"No, I never thought I'd be able to play this long. When I broke in to the NHL as an 18-year-old kid, I told Greg Millen, my teammate in Hartford, that if I could last 12 years, I'd be happy. Now here I am finishing my 21st season. Unbelievable."

Francis will remember his time with the Penguins as the best part of his career. The Stanley Cups in '91 and '92. The chance of a lifetime to skate with Lemieux and Jagr. His relationship with Pittsburgh, so strong that he still gets big ovations when he comes into Mellon Arena and so strong that he moved his family back here for each of the past three summers. It was only this spring, as a concession to his three children and their activities, that he decided to sell his North Hills home and stay in the Raleigh area year-round.

That's how good it's getting for Francis in Carolina. He sees no reason why the Hurricanes can't keep winning. With Boston and Philadelphia eliminated, Carolina is the highest seed left in the East. It's hard to like them against Montreal because of the Canadiens' edge with hot goaltender Jose Theodore, but Kevin Weekes did stop 72 of 74 shots in the final two games against the Devils after taking over for struggling Arturs Irbe.

"It's not like we're going to be happy winning one series," Francis said. "We definitely don't feel like we're done yet ...

"Remember how much fun it was in Pittsburgh that first year we won the Cup? I want them to be able experience that here. This area is known for NASCAR and ACC basketball. I want it to be known for hockey, too."

GiveHyzduashot
05-03-2002, 07:27 PM
That's a great story. Those are some of the reasons Ronnie Francis is probably my most favorite NHL player.

Francis is one of my all-time favorites, too. I'm happy to see him have success this late in his career.

Can you believe the Hurricanes beat the Canadiens last night?? Amazing.

Detroit won, San Jose won, and I believe Ottawa won.

I'm not a fan of Ottawa, but anyone who can beat the $h!t out of the Leafs won't hear any complaints from me.

Great article on Francis - thanks for posting that, Shawn.

The Wings took care of business, although they looked a little shaky in the last few minutes. Now we'll see if the Avs can get back on track - Blake just scored his second goal of the day - Avs lead 2-0 early in the second period.

The Avs just crushed the Sharks 8-2...a lot of goals in this game! It's good to see they have Blake back - he was huge - as was De Vries. We may get that Avs/Wings matchup after all...

An 8-2 hockey game is the kind of game I hate to see.

This series is ridiculous ... 20 goals in 2 games! That's lousy hockey.

It looks like the Wings will win their series in six games. St. Louis will win the next two ...

The Sharks beat the Ave's 5-3 to take the series lead back to the Shark Tank

Doh! If the Avs are going to do it, they'll have to do it the hard way...Ricci is killing them pretty much single-handedly...I'm sure glad the Avs traded him away - although he was hurt most of the time he was here. When are these GMs gonna learn? Do not trade good players within your own division - in any sport!

Nothing like giving the Wings a few days to rest up...if the Sharks take this, I'll say the Wings in four...and then the Cup in four more! If the Avs come back, all bets are off!

Go Avs!

Well, the Avs eked out a win to tie the series at 3 apiece...it could happen...
