The Matt Harrington saga has taken an unprecedented turn – the former national High School Player of the Year actually signed with a major league organization. According to Baseball America magazine, Harrington has signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs. The deal included no signing bonus and no guarantee Harrington will make a minor league roster out of spring training. He was selected by the Colorado Rockies with the seventh overall pick in the 2000 draft. The Rockies offered Harrington a $3.95 million signing bonus, but it was rejected on the advice of agent Tommy Tanzer. Further negotiations went nowhere, and Harrington signed to pitch for the independent St. Paul Saints and prepared to go back in the draft. The Padres selected Harrington, who changed agents from Tanzer to Scott Boras, in the second round of the 2001 draft. The sides never came to terms, Harrington rejecting a $1.2 million offer. According to an earlier Baseball America story, Harrington supplemented his meager minor league salary with an offseason job at a Target department store.
From 3.95 million to Target.

The Padres selected Harrington, who changed agents from Tanzer to Scott Boras...That's all I needed to read. Hope his arm falls off, no offense to the Cubs.

Got to love it when young kids who think pro sports "owe" them more end up getting bit it in the ass because of their greed. He would have been set for LIFE with that $3.95 million bonus. You thik he ever wakes up in the morning regretting that decision as he gets ready for his job at Target?

great career move. 3.95 million or Target. :hmm:

Now he comes to the Cubs. How do we always get stuck with guys like this? And we wonder why we haven't won anything in 100 years? Guess if he can't pitch at least he'll be able to help his teammates find the garden or small appliance section with ease. :D
