This is from CNN:
Aircraft crashes into New York building
NEW YORK (CNN) -- An aircraft has crashed into the middle of a brick luxury highrise residential building on Manhattan's Upper East Side at 72nd Street and York Avenue, police officials said.
The building is very close to the East River. There was no word on casualties as firefighters battled the flames that shot up from several windows on the 10th story. The Federal Aviation Administration has said a "general aviation" aircraft had hit the building.
A North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) spokesperson told CNN that it had not been tracking the plane.
Witness Sarah Steiner told CNN that fires were burning on the ground. "It looks like the plane just flew into someone's living room there."
"It looks as if the aircraft didn't go into the building but fell down," she said. "It may be part of the debris burning on the ground."
Steiner said that when she arrived, she saw fire shooting out of two windows on approximately the 30th floor of the 50 story building.
Video from the scene shows at least three apartments in the high rise fully engulfed in flames.

I have the TV on. Channel 4 is now saying there are 4 casualties. 2 in the plane, and 2 residents of the building.
NY1 is also saying the plane is registered in Lakeland, FL, and is registered to Corey Lidle. But they are not saying he was on board.

Sorry, that was Channel 2 - WCBS - that was reporting it was registered to Corey Lidle.
Now they're saying that right now the Yankees are trying to locate him. :(

Oh, geez. They're now saying that a member of the Yankee organization was on this plane. :(
They're not saying for sure that he was on the plane, though......:(

They're saying that there WAS a Yankee on the plane, but not directly saying Lidle himself. That doesn't make sense.

Wow! Too sad. Had my head buried in work here and never got around to checking any news wires off the ticker most of the day.
What a freakin' shame. Not that there's a good time for something like this to happen, but this sure is a bad time considering the games that are to be played today, one of them right there in New York. Got to be tough on all of the players to have to carry on through something like this.

How does a plane, even a small plane, crash into a giant building and only kill 2-4 people?
rockin500
10-11-2006, 10:16 PM
because the building is VERY sturdy, and the plane is very flimsy. that plane has very little mass., comparitively speaking.

Crash is real scare for Met coach Acta
BY ADAM RUBIN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
Mets third base coach Manny Acta left his upper East Side apartment at 2 p.m. yesterday bound for Shea. Forty-five minutes later, Cory Lidle's plane slammed into his building at 524 E. 72nd St., killing the Yankees pitcher and his flight instructor.
"This is a moment when you put life in perspective," Acta said. "There are so many other things more important than your work. I wouldn't say it's a coincidence that I live there. I just have a job, like everybody else. Whoever works at a hospital or a post office, if he lives there, he can say it's a coincidence, too. It just happened that I'm here in a spotlight with the Mets. I'm just like everybody else living in the building. I just hope everybody else is okay."
Even before the tragedy, Acta had planned to spend his final night in his apartment last night. His family had returned to Florida, and Acta planned to spend whatever remained of the Mets' postseason in a hotel after the team returned from St. Louis.
Acta first heard about the crash when his real-estate agent called him to see if he was safe.
"The real-estate agent and the owner of the apartment building just called me to see where I was," Acta said. "I said, 'I'm at work.' They had a sigh of relief, because they didn't know where I was. I asked what happened. They said what happened. My daughter called me right away, too. And my wife. The phone was ringing off the hook with my friends who know where I'm living. It's scary stuff."
Acta watched developments on TV, as did players and coaches. He lived in a different part of the building and said his apartment was undamaged.
"I found out from the phone call, and then we turned the TV on in the clubhouse," Acta said. "The original report said on 71st (St.), so I said, 'Oh, I just live one street over.' And then, when they clarified everything, I found out it's exactly the street.
"At first they wouldn't say the address. And then they said 524, which is my building."

Crash Met

Lidle news 'horrific'
BY PETER BOTTE
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
The news of Cory Lidle's death spread quickly, through the Mets' car radios and the Cardinals' cell phones in taxis and buses that were headed to Shea.
Players and coaches in both clubhouses - some former teammates and some who had never met the Yankees pitcher - were floored when they learned that Lidle was the owner of the single-engine plane that he and co-pilot later indentified as Tyler Stanger were in when it crashed into a 50-story Manhattan building yesterday afternoon.
"It's horrific. I wish I had words. I have no words," said Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson, who was Lidle's pitching coach with Oakland in 2001-02. "I have very strong emotions and it's just sadder than sad. There are no words to describe a loss of somebody that you spent very special times with.
"You want to find out that maybe it's not true, but obviously what they are reporting is true. It's one of the most unbelievable things I've ever heard of, how horrific this is."
Lidle played for seven teams in a nine-year MLB career, beginning with one season with the Mets in 1997. Thus, there was a slew of players in each clubhouse who called themselves former teammates and friends.
Mets infielder Chris Woodward, who grew up in same area as Lidle in Southern California and later was Lidle's teammate with Toronto, expressed relief that last night's NLCS opener at Shea was rained out. Carlos Delgado also was with the Blue Jays when Lidle was there in 2003.
"It's really sad. It's tragic. A member of the baseball family passed away. It's tough and I'm sure it's tough for his family," Delgado said. "There are a lot more important things in life. Sometimes we take things for granted. Life can be short sometimes."
Like Peterson, injured Cardinals pitchers Mark Mulder and Jason Isringhausen were close with Lidle from their days together in Oakland. Mulder and Lidle were golfing buddies in Oakland, and later, too, whenever their teams crossed paths after both left the A's. Isringhausen was part of a regular card game with Lidle and others in the raucous A's clubhouse and on their team plane.
"He started taking the (flying) lessons when he was in Oakland....I know he loved flying," Mulder said. "I talked to him when he got traded (to the Yankees) just for a minute...and that was the last time I talked to him. It's just unbelievable. I can't imagine what his wife and son are going through. I feel terrible."
Both Mulder and Isringhausen coincidentally underwent surgery this season at the Hospital for Special Surgery, across the street from the accident site. Both also met in recent weeks with Mets team physician Dr. David Altchek in his office in the East-Side building that was struck by Lidle's plane.
"I was trying to get in a cab in the city, no one knew what was going on and the cabbie turned on the radio and we heard a plane hit a building," said Isringhausen, who also Lidle's teammate with the Mets in 1997. "I called my wife and said I was just there two weeks ago. When we got to the park, everything unfolded and we learned the plane belonged to Cory, and the worst thoughts go into your head.
"It's just a shock. You get the chills, the cold sweats. It's just a shame to happen to someone so young with a bright future and a great family. It's just a sad day."
Mets closer Billy Wagner has admitted he didn't have a close relationship with Lidle when they were teammates in Philly in 2004 and 2005, but added, "Life is a little bit more important than baseball. It's tough for everybody that knew Cory. It shows how quickly life can be taken."
Several players, including Mets star David Wright, believed it was better for both teams that last night's Game 1 of the NLCS was rained out. "It'd still be tough to get up for a baseball game after one of our baseball brothers was killed in an airplane accident," he said.
"We obviously all would have been out there with heavy hearts and a renewed sense of what we're doing," said Game 1 starter Tom Glavine. "That's life, and life is hard sometimes."

I was on my way to Shea Wednesday afternoon as the story was unfolding. Originally they were saying that just because the plane was registered to him, it's common for owners to lease them out. Then they couldn't reach him on his cell phone. Then they found his passport on the ground. (That's when I knew.) Then there were reports that he told friends he was going flying that day.
His wife and son were on a plane to California as this story was unfolding. There were met at the gate by an airline employee and some sort of police type person.
He just brought his plane up from the Philly area last week. He wanted to fly around New York to see it. He was a fairly new pilot, and was learning new things.
Very sad. RIP
