certainly sounds that way. All reports are suggesting that Sweet Lou will be hired as the new manager within the next few days and all they are doing is final negotiations. Supposedly 4 years in the 16-20 million.

Also, cubs are expected to push their payroll up into the 110 million range.

cubs needed to show that they are big time. Hendry especially needs to win and win now. I could have lived with any of the candidates really. Both Girardi and Piniella are pretty similar in temperaments and Piniella has won before. At least he wont put up with any crap.

the one negative with Piniella is that he is getting older (63) so you dont expect him to be around for 10 years, whereas Girardi could have been around forever.

The payroll has to increase and if it does, that should make the marriage work out. At least piniella has more of a shot with the cubs than the devil rays.

I heard he was signed for 3 years.

this just seems to be a weird fit for me, personality wise. But he does know his stuff.

And I'd much rather see Pinella managing than broadcasting!

I heard on the radio on the way home from work this morning that his first order of business is to try and get Arod. The only way I see them getting him is if Zambrano is involved in the deal. They will not win with Piniella there if they go this route. Who else will pitch halfway descent??

The Cubbies can't afford to lose Zambrano, with all the injuries sustained by Wood and Prior.

Can they afford Pay-Rod?? Or would they be looking for Georgie to pay a good chunk of his salary? If so, he'd have a right to expect something decent in return. But pitching wins ball games, not third basemen or shortstops. So they can't put Zambrano on the table.

I personally would love to see A-Rod go to Chicago. That way I could go back to rooting for him again!!

you could probably package together a group that doesnt include zambrano. They have the young arms and young position players (including on the major league roster)

and yes robin they could easily afford the salary. They are expected to increase by payroll by nearly 20 million next year.

Piniella just doesn't seem to fit with this organization which really needs to go younger for a little bit and would work better under a Girardi or someone else. They should not expect to win right now and, even though they have been connected to every star on the FA list, they should not depend on free agent signings for the core of the team.
