I have been reading as much as I can find on the subject of Scott Rolen and Jim Edmonds trying to gauge for myself what if anything will be happening in the offseason. I smell something big happening.....I have a gut feeling that the Cardinals will try and pull off a big trade this offseason to move Scott Rolen...his contract breaks down like this:
8 years/$90M (2003-10)
signed extension 9/02
$5M signing bonus
03:$7M, 04:$8M, 05:$11M, 06:$11M, 07:$12M, 08:$12M, 09:$12M, 10:$12M
$10M deferred ($2M/year from 2003 to 2007)
full no-trade clause
$50,000 All Star incentive
agents: Levinson brothers, ACES
ML service: 9.060
Obviously he has a full no-trade clause in his contract, but evidently he and LaRussa have had a kind of "falling out" over the past year. Right or wrong and without getting into the details of the apparent relationship troubles...usually when LaRussa has a "falling out" with one of his players they don't last in St. Louis long after. Scott has had a history of injuries, especailly at the worst possible times (like playoff time!). I remember Tony making a comment last year that stuck in my brain, he said something like "We have alot of money tied up in three position players"....meaning, Scott Rolen, Albert Pujols (no chance of him departing...sorry everybody!), and Jim Edmonds. The question posed that brought about that statement was regarding spending more money on pitching....something this team has been hot on doing for the past two seasons, but a lack of payroll room has kept them from.
I think Jim is willing to take a drastic pay cut to stay here, but Rolen will continue to draw A 12 million dollar sum next year. I would not at all be surprised to see them try and package Reyes and Rolen to get a big time pitcher or another big time impact position player.
There are alot of Cardinal free agent pitchers and players...here are their contracts.

Obviously Walt Jocketty has alot of work to do this offseason....as he does in most. This year may be different because of the obvious need for a big time hitter to put behind Albert. Tony will want to add more power to this team, that is his MO with all of his teams....he loves to have plenty of power in his line ups. I doubt they will take a wait and see approach with Edmonds and Rolen. one or the other will have to go....otherwise they could be back in the very same boat they are in this year with almost no protection for Pujols.
I expect them to go after another pitcher and let Marquis go. I am reasonabley sure they will keep Weaver and resign Suppan to a one or two year deal. I don't think Tony is as high on Reyes as he once was for obvious reasons....he may be trade bait but we'll have to see what happens with free agent signings on the pitching front. If they keep Weaver & Suppan, they have Carpenter tied up for another year....they are supposedly going to put Wainright in a starting role...so that leaves one starting pitcher left to sign...or they can put Reyes in there....but I really doubt they will do that...I think they will go after Buerhle or another pitcher.
I think if they trade Rolen and sign Ramirez from Chicago then they might save a little jack and possibly get a pretty good pitcher in return for Rolen. More to come when I have more info........
