The Padres have decided on Bud Black as their manager, according to major league sources.

Black, 49, is expected to attend the team's award banquet in downtown San Diego on Thursday. Black, a former San Diego State pitcher who lives in Rancho Santa Fe, replaces Bruce Bochy, who had been the club's manager since October 1994 before accepting a three-year contract with the Giants last month.

Padres CEO Sandy Alderson interviewed Black on Tuesday, six days after Padres General Manager Kevin Towers and three other Padres officials had interviewed Black.

Black spent the last seven years as the pitching coach for Angels manager Mike Scioscia, and his 2002 staff helped the Angels win their first World Series title.

The left-hander also pitched for 15 years in the major leagues, compiling a 121-116 record and a 3.84 ERA in 398 games. He was a member of the Royals' 1985 World Series team.

From 1996-99, Black worked as a special assistant to the general manager of the Cleveland Indians.

Before and after the Padres interviewed Black, club officials with the Padres, Angels and Indians described him as highly intelligent and sensible, an excellent communicator with good people skills and a good sense of humor. With the Angels, one of his strengths was working with the team's pitchers and catchers on game plans.

Of the six candidates interviewed by the Towers panel, Alderson also interviewed Trey Hillman, the manager of the Japan Series-champion Nippon-Ham Fighters; and Dusty Baker, who most recently managed the Cubs from 2003-06.

What he said....

Not that I thought Baker had a shot anyway. Alderson would never pay him enough nor like someone he couldn't tell who to play on a daily basis.
