NAPLES, Fla. – The Padres added to their bullpen Wednesday morning by acquiring relief pitchers Royce Ring and Heath Bell from the New York Mets for outfielder Ben Johnson and reliever Jon Adkins.
Ring, 26, is a La Mesa native who attended Monte Vista High and San Diego State. He was the 18th player selected overall in the 2002 draft by the Chicago White Sox, who traded the left-hander to the Mets in 2003 for second baseman Roberto Alomar.
Ring, who is 6-foot and 220 pounds, recorded a 3.47 ERA in 26 games over parts of two seasons with the Mets. He had a 2.13 ERA in 11 games this season. Left-handed hitters are batting .150 against him.
Bell (6-2, 244) is 1-5 with a 4.92 ERA in 81 games over parts of three seasons with the Mets, who signed him as a free agent in 1998. A hard thrower, Bell has 105 strikeouts in 108 career innings.
Ring and Bell will join a Padres bullpen that already includes Trevor Hoffman, Scott Linebrink, Cla Meredith and Scott Cassidy. Padres General Manager Kevin Towers said the club also is interested in re-signing free agents Alan Embree and Doug Brocail.
“Relievers are in short supply and Ring gives us a left-hander for the seventh- and eighth-inning slots,” Towers said.
Johnson, 25, hit .250 for the Padres last season while shuttling between San Diego and Triple-A Portland. Some members of the Padres front office projected Johnson as contending for a starting outfield slot next year, although his role probably would have been as a fourth outfielder.
The right-handed Adkins, 39, was 2-1 with a 3.98 ERA in 55 appearances with the Padres after signing as a minor league free agent before last season.
