Justin Morneau Named 2006 A.L. MVP!

Justin Morneau's breakout season landed the Twins slugger his first MVP award on Tuesday as the first baseman bested odds-on favorite Derek Jeter, in addition David Ortiz and teammate Joe Mauer, to become the first Twin to win the award since Rod Carew in 1977. Morneau hit .321 with 34 home runs, 97 runs scored and 130 RBIs, ranking second only to Ortiz, who led the AL with 137 RBIs. He was the first Twins player to hit 30 or more home runs in a season since 1987 and his 130 RBIs rank second-best in team history to Harmon Killebrew's 140 in 1969, who also won the MVP award that season.

Three Twinkies with Top-10 finishes.

Quite impressive :smokin:

Mauer should have finished MUCH higher, IMO.

It would have been much better to get a WS win out of the deal but you take what you can get and Justin did have a great season!!!!

I wonder if someone is still calling for him to be traded. :notme:

AL MVP Justin Morneau reiterated his desire to sign a long-term contract with the Twins. "I mean, I'd love to," he said. "This is a great place to play. We've got that new ballpark coming [in 2010]. We've got a lot of young guys, and this team has a chance to be good for a while. There's a lot of potential here, and I want to be a part of it for sure." Morneau said the sides have not begun to discuss a long-term deal. General Manager Terry Ryan declined to say if Morneau will get a long-term offer, reasoning that he'd have to answer the same question for Joe Mauer and Michael Cuddyer, who also are arbitration eligible. "He's going to get rewarded," Ryan said of Morneau. "Don't worry about that."
