Cubs make play for righty Schmidt

The Cubs, anxious to steal the winter and maybe the summer, too, are now pursuing star free-agent pitcher Jason Schmidt, SI.com has learned. The Cubs already have spent $239 million on free agents (including the $10 million they used for new manager Lou Piniella), and two high-ranking baseball people said they are bidding about $45 million over three years for Schmidt in attempt to lure him away from the West Coast.

Cubs GM Jim Hendry disputed the $45 million figure but didn't deny that the club was pursuing Schmidt.

It may not be easy in his case. The Yankees showed interest in Schmidt several days ago but were told that he didn't want to move all the away across the country, to New York.

The Mariners and Dodgers are seen as the favorites for Schmidt, the longtime San Francisco Giant who is from Washington state. Seattle has stated its desire to land one frontline starter, if not two. The Dodgers just signed Randy Wolf to a one-year, $8-million deal and are negotiating with Greg Maddux, who's drawing interest from San Diego, as well.

The Cubs, obviously hungry to break their streak of not winning the World Series since 1908, made the biggest score so far this winter when they signed Alfonso Soriano for $136 million over eight years. But they haven't stopped there.

Pitching is the Cubs' stated priority now, and Schmidt is one of two No. 1-type starters on the free agent market, along with left-hander Barry Zito. The Cubs have previously been reported to have interest in Gil Meche.

Schmidt is the perfect #2 pitcher between Zambrano and Hill. If Prior can be any semblance of his old self, that would be a very, very tough rotation.

Overpay for Schmidt, Jim Hendry, if for no other reason than to keep him away from the Cardinals!

So much for that. Schmidt lands in LA.

The Cubs really need pitching. I just don't want to see them overpay for a guy like Gil Meche and then here them tout him as some sort of improvement.

well, i didnt really expect to land schmidt. he really did want to stay on the west coast and it was going to cost major major coin to pry him east.

It seems the Cubs did make a strong run at him, but he had his mind set on the West Coast.

If you're the Cubs, what do you do with the starting rotation now that he's out of the picutre?

for better or for worse, they'll be going after lilly and meche both. I'd hold my nose doing it, but I would trust them over guys like marshall, guzman, marmol and some of the other guys we trotted out there this past year (the only one i care for in the rookie group from last year was Hill, and that was in the 2nd incarnation of him when he finally learned how to pitch aggressively instead of the passive crap that he did the first go around)
