A's young lefty dominates to prevent sweep
By John Schlegel / MLB.com
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Miguel Tejada hit a homer for the third time in as many days against the Yankees, and this one finally led to an A's victory.
Tejada's three-run homer in the fourth inning off Mike Mussina gave the A's enough support for starter Barry Zito in a 6-2 victory over the Yankees on Thursday afternoon at Network Associates Coliseum. The Oakland victory averted a three-game sweep by the Yankees, who took the first two games of the series.
Tejada's shot into the left-field bleachers was the 100th homer of his career, and his fifth of the season. Tejada went 3-for-3 on the day and drew a walk for a perfect day at the plate.
Catcher Greg Myers added another homer off Mussina (3-1) in the sixth, and Zito (1-1) carried a shutout into the seventh inning before allowing the only run charged to him.
In a rematch of pitchers from Game 3 of last year's AL Division Series Game 3, Mussina and the Zito hooked up in the series finale of the series dominated by Jason Giambi's return to Oakland. Giambi went 0-for-4 Thursday to finish 4-for-12 for the series.
Last October, Mussina pitched seven shutout innings and Zito allowed only two hits -- but that was a homer to Jorge Posada that turned out to be the only run in a 1-0 Yankees victory that helped turn the series around. This time, Zito and the A's came out on top.
Zito allowed just five hits in his seven innings of work while striking out six -- including the Yankees' 3-4-5 trio of Derek Jeter, Giambi and Jorge Posada in order in the fourth inning. Zito also struck out the final two batters of the fifth inning, after allowing singles to Randell White and Shane Spencer, escaping the worst trouble he saw the whole game.
The Yankees scored their only run off Zito in the seventh, when White led off with a double, moved to third on a flyout by Ron Coomer and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Spencer.
New York added a run off reliever Chad Bradford in the eighth, as Alfonso Soriano and Bernie Williams led off with back-to-back singles and Derek Jeter beat out a potential double-play ball to drive Soriano home.
The A's then went to lefty Mike Magnante to face Giambi, who grounded into a 6-5-3 double play -- yes, that's right, 6-5-3. The A's were shifted to the right against Giambi, shortstop Tejada started the double play from the right side of the infield, snapping a throw to third baseman Eric Chavez at second to start the double play.
