well, at least people in the bleachers should be able to get a workout. *yuck*
on the bright side, at least our bench just got a lot better as marquis certainly knows how to hit.

Ray, I just don't understand the thought process behind giving a pitcher coming off such an awful year a three-year deal. One year with an option wouldn't wuite bother me so much.

i wouldnt have been happy with a one year with an option either, but I would have understood it. 3 years for the worst pitcher in the majors last year? uhhh not good.
You can rationalize all the other moves. Soriano at least has some justification. same with derosa and even lilly. (and obviously ramirez).
maybe the sticker shock will put hendry back in the hospital!

I hate this move. But let's look at the big picture. Right now, we have six starters. Forget health issues for a minute, and let's look at the best case scenario.
1. Carlos Zambrano
2. Mark Prior
3. Rich Hill
4. Wade Miller
5. Ted Lilly
6. Jason Marquis
Best case scenario, Marquis doesn't crack the rotation. As far as talent goes, Lilly looks pretty good as the #5 starter. Here's hoping for six healthy pitchers! (Who am I kidding?)

i doubt wade miller and prior will be healthy for longer than 2 weeks at a time....

:( I know. I'm just trying to look at the bright side. I won't fall into the trap of expecting anything from Prior. I'm far beyond that point. But you gotta admit, that is a pretty tough rotation if they somehow can stay healthy!

for all the money they are paying Marquis & Lilly, I'd rather they just signed Jason Schmidt. He by himself is worth both of those guys IMO.

I believe the Cubs made a strong run at Schmidt. I think in the end it was just a matter of Schmidt's preference to play on the West coast winning out.
That said, I do not condone this Marquis move at all. I don't see how one of [Guzman, Marshall, Marmol, Mateo, Ryu, Cotts] couldn't step up and put up comparable numbers to Marquis for much, much less money.

I agree with you on the whole Schmidt attempted signing. He most definitely wanted to stay on the west coast. Thankfully we won't have to face him as many times as we would have had he signed with the Cardinals.
As far as Marquis goes, don't we already have Glendon Rusch on our team? Why sign another inconsistant starter? I agree: let the young guys give it another shot or go after Zito or something.

I am soooo glad that guy is gone from STL...he is bonafide head case.....he's the reason that leo bounces around in the dugout! The Cardinals tried everything to get this guy's head out of his butt, so did that Braves......who know's m,aybe the Cubs will have better luck:)

What scares me is that two of the most respected pitching coaches in baseball couldn't fix him. What makes the Cubs think they can?

If he turns it around I'd be amazed! Either way, I'm glad he's gone!
