DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers said Tuesday that the club has not tendered a contract for the 2007 season to Alexis Gomez, allowing the outfielder to become a free agent.
Gomez split the 2006 season between Detroit and Triple-A Toledo. In 62 games with the Tigers, he batted .272 with a home run and six RBIs. He hit .288 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs in 58 games at Toledo.
The Tigers said Gomez's spot on the 40-man roster will be taken by right-handed pitcher Jose Mesa, who agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Tigers on Monday.
