Jeff Suppan continues what seems like an inevitable winter trek toward also becoming a former Cardinal.
Two months to the day after winning the MVP of the National League Championship Series for the Cardinals, righthander Jeff Suppan has three teams in hot pursuit, his agent said Monday.
Scott Leventhal, Suppan's representative, said his client has received one offer from a team he declined to identify and is expecting another shortly. Milwaukee and Pittsburgh are two of the three teams making the strongest push for Suppan. Several others, such as the New York Mets, San Francisco, Texas and Seattle, are poised to woo Suppan after Barry Zito makes his decision.
"There is a whole other extended market out there" for Suppan, Leventhal said. "It has intensified." Advertisement
The Cardinals' interest in Suppan, who started Game 7 of the NLCS two months ago today, has grown tepid as the market for him climbed into the four-year, $40 million-plus range. They are not the unidentified third team. The Cardinals offered a three-year deal worth less than $20 million, according to sources
