ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Detroit Tigers third baseman Dean Palmer will undergo rotator cuff surgery on his right shoulder next week, and miss the rest of the season.
Palmer, who hasn't played since July 1, was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the third time of the season Friday. The move is retroactive to July 3.
He is hitting .222 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs.
Manager Phil Garner said Palmer is expected back at full strength for next season.
''He should be OK by spring training,'' Garner said. ''We expect this will be somewhat minor compared to the other one, and hopefully we can put this behind us.''
Palmer also had surgery on his shoulder after last season, when he batted .256 with 29 homers and 102 RBIs.
Pedro Santana was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to replace Palmer on the roster. Santana is batting .212 for the Mud Hens with 25 stolen bases in 76 games
