MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers agreed to terms Monday with right-hander Claudio Vargas on a one-year contract, avoiding arbitration and leaving only two arbitration-eligible players yet unsigned.

The team acquired Vargas, 28, along with catcher Johnny Estrada and reliever Greg Aquino from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Nov. 25 for pitchers Doug Davis and Dana Eveland and former first-round draft pick Dave Krynzel, an outfielder. Vargas is expected to pitch at the back end of a Milwaukee rotation that includes right-handers Ben Sheets, Jeff Suppan and Dave Bush and left-hander Chris Capuano.

And then there were two.

The Milwaukee Brewers reached agreement Monday on a one-year, $2.5 million deal with right-hander Claudio Vargas, avoiding salary arbitration. The deal leaves the Brewers with two players remaining in arbitration: infielder-turned-outfielder Bill Hall and catcher Johnny Estrada.

As with their other agreements with arbitration-eligible players, the Brewers and Vargas settled at the midpoint of the figures exchanged. Vargas had requested a salary of $2.85 million, with the Brewers filing for $2.15 million.
