Tigers | Gonzalez to Detroit?
Sun, 4 Feb 2007 13:42:52 -0800
Jesse Sanchez, of Texas.Rangers.MLB.com, reports that former MLB OF Juan Gonzalez is attempting to make a comeback, in an attempt to reach the 500-homer mark before he retires. Gonzalez, who spent last season with the Long Island Ducks of the Independent League, has 434 home runs and 1,404 runs batted in, in his 17-year career with the Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians. According to published reports in Puerto Rico, at least four MLB teams are interested in signing him for the 2007 season, including the Tigers.

If they do sign him, how do you think the fans will treat him?

If they do sign him, I don't think there is any way he makes the team. He tried with the Indians last year or the year before, and he looked awful.

I think when most Tigers fans hear the name Juan Gonzalez, they feel relieved, like they just dodged a bullet. He would have had two years left on that monsterous deal Randy Smith tried to sign him to. Luckily for us, he turned it down. Unlucky for Juan Gone, he missed out on all that loot, and now he'll be lucky to get a minor-league deal somewhere.
I don't see him getting to the 500-homer mark. It must tell you something about Juan Gone when his former team, the Rangers, would rather sign an even older player (Sammy Sosa) than they would a former MVP and team hero. Juan is very injury-prone, and also sulks alot in the clubhouse and to the media. Teams could deal with that side of him when he was mashing homers and driving in a ton of runs, but those days are long gone now.
Besides, GM Dave Dombrowski has already said the team has no interest in Gonzalez whatsoever. I think either Juan Gone or his agent fabricated most of the "rumor" regarding teams being interested in him. The way he treated the front-office and fans while he was here is still a vivid memory, and it's safe to assume he's not welcome back.

Why should the Tigers sign him? They gave up a ton of talent, that they couldn't afford to give up for him, offered him the biggest contract in baseball at the time for him, and he turned around and said a big FU to the team.
He only played when he felt like it, he whined about everything, he tore the clubhouse apart, then left via free agency after 1 season with a giant finger in the air at the club. I hope he doesn't sign with anyone. He's one giant peice of $hit and i hope nothing but the worst on him. :doublefin

As much as I disliked the Yankees I think Bernie Williams would be a nice left handed bat.

I'd love to see him play again in the majors.
