Tigers | Verlander struggles Monday

Bryan Hoch, of Tigers.MLB.com, reports Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander cruised through the first inning but struggled in the second inning of his Monday, March 5, start against the New York Yankees. Verlander gave up a two-run home run to Yankees LF Hideki Matsui then threw a couple of wild pitches allowing C Jorge Posada to advance to third base. Posada later scored on an infield groundout. Verlander allowed three runs and struck out one in his 34-pitch, 17 strike performance.

The Detroit Free Press' John Lowe reports Detroit Tigers C Ivan Rodriguez is a prime candidate to bat leadoff during the regular season, at least against left-handed pitchers.

Jason Beck, of Tigers.MLB.com, reports Detroit Tigers SP Nate Robertson will start Thursday, March 8, against the Cincinnati Reds. Ps Joel Zumaya, Zach Miner, Edward Campusano, RPs Fernando Rodney, Felix Heredia, and SP Wilfredo Ledezma are slated to pitch in relief for the Tigers.

Updating a previous item, the Associated Press reports Detroit Tigers OF Magglio Ordonez (head) was feeling better Sunday, March 11, one day after being hit in the head by a pitch. He said he was still a little dizzy but was otherwise fine. Ordonez, who has a bandage under his left ear, might be able to play as soon as Monday, March 12.

Tigers | Thames has knee examined

The Detroit Free Press reports Detroit Tigers OF Marcus Thames (knee) had a sore knee examined this week. He hasn't played since March 4. "He went to the doctor yesterday, and everything was fine -- just a little pinch, but no damage or major problems," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "We got the best possible news we could have gotten."
