Alou Will Be Close to Murders He Can't Forget
By BEN SHPIGEL
The New York Times
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The phone rang in Moises Alou's apartment in Montreal. It was late, creeping toward midnight, and his wife, Austria, six months pregnant with their second child, was sitting beside him, watching a movie.
She answered the phone. On the other end was an aunt, calling from Brooklyn. The connection was poor, and it was just as well, for Austria could not hear the aunt sobbing through the static. She passed the phone to her husband.
Did Alou do the right thing in not telling his wife immediately about the murders?
Yes
No
No one can say unless they're in that position

Moises Alou signed with the Mets in the offseason, meaning he will play his home games just 11 miles from where two in-laws were murdered.

Alou was a young star with the Montreal Expos when he received a dreadful phone call from an aunt during the '95 season.

One of the lowest - and most controversial - moments of Alou's career was his infamous run-in with Steve Bartman during Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS.

Alou got to play for his father Felipe on two teams. He was so close to his slain father-in-law that he'd talk to him more than his own dad.

The 40-year-old Alou's career is winding down, but he is making a stop with the Mets before calling it quits.

A-Rod? He'd fit Wright in
David vows to make switch if Bomber becomes a Met

PORT ST. LUCIE - Alex Rodriguez had to switch positions to become a Yankee because of Derek Jeter's presence at shortstop. But the matinee-idol star on the other side of town would be willing to make a similar move on the minuscule chance A-Rod lands in Flushing next season.
If Rodriguez exercises his right to opt out of his mega-contract after 2007, David Wright said he'd "absolutely" vacate third base and switch to the outfield or second base if the Mets decide to pursue A-Rod as a free agent.

David Wright is not on bubble as far as his Mets career goes but he did suggest that should Alex Rodriguez make the swing from Bronx to Flushing, he would would be willing to overlook his own All-Star status and vacate third base for the perhaps soon-to-be-free Yankee.

Trachsel career for Birds

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
FORT LAUDERDALE - Steve Trachsel was prepared to stay home and become a full-time dad following a winter in which his phone didn't ring nearly as much as he had anticipated.
Trachsel won a team-high 15 games for the NL East-champion Mets last season, but his six-year tenure with the organization basically ended after he asked out of Game 3 of the NLCS with a leg injury after one pinball inning.
