Alou Will Be Close to Murders He Can't Forget
By BEN SHPIGEL
The New York Times

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The phone rang in Moises Alou's apartment in Montreal. It was late, creeping toward midnight, and his wife, Austria, six months pregnant with their second child, was sitting beside him, watching a movie.

She answered the phone. On the other end was an aunt, calling from Brooklyn. The connection was poor, and it was just as well, for Austria could not hear the aunt sobbing through the static. She passed the phone to her husband.

Did Alou do the right thing in not telling his wife immediately about the murders?
Yes
No
No one can say unless they're in that position

Moises Alou signed with the Mets in the offseason, meaning he will play his home games just 11 miles from where two in-laws were murdered.

Alou was a young star with the Montreal Expos when he received a dreadful phone call from an aunt during the '95 season.

One of the lowest - and most controversial - moments of Alou's career was his infamous run-in with Steve Bartman during Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS.

Alou got to play for his father Felipe on two teams. He was so close to his slain father-in-law that he'd talk to him more than his own dad.

The 40-year-old Alou's career is winding down, but he is making a stop with the Mets before calling it quits.

A-Rod? He'd fit Wright in
David vows to make switch if Bomber becomes a Met

BY PETER BOTTE
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

PORT ST. LUCIE - Alex Rodriguez had to switch positions to become a Yankee because of Derek Jeter's presence at shortstop. But the matinee-idol star on the other side of town would be willing to make a similar move on the minuscule chance A-Rod lands in Flushing next season.

If Rodriguez exercises his right to opt out of his mega-contract after 2007, David Wright said he'd "absolutely" vacate third base and switch to the outfield or second base if the Mets decide to pursue A-Rod as a free agent.

David Wright is not on bubble as far as his Mets career goes but he did suggest that should Alex Rodriguez make the swing from Bronx to Flushing, he would would be willing to overlook his own All-Star status and vacate third base for the perhaps soon-to-be-free Yankee.

Trachsel career for Birds

BY PETER BOTTE
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

FORT LAUDERDALE - Steve Trachsel was prepared to stay home and become a full-time dad following a winter in which his phone didn't ring nearly as much as he had anticipated.

Trachsel won a team-high 15 games for the NL East-champion Mets last season, but his six-year tenure with the organization basically ended after he asked out of Game 3 of the NLCS with a leg injury after one pinball inning.

WRIGHT: I'D MOVE OVER FOR A-ROD
By MARK HALE

March 5, 2007 -- FORT LAUDERDALE - When the Yankees traded for Alex Rodriguez, he switched positions. If the Mets get A-Rod after this year, David Wright wouldn't mind doing it himself.

A-Rod has an option to escape his Yankees contract after this season, and yesterday Wright confirmed a report that said he would be fine with abandoning third base and allowing Rodriguez to play the hot corner if A-Rod came to the Mets.

SLOW LEARNER
MASTERING CHANGEUP COULD MAKE JOHN A METS MAINE-STAY

March 5, 2007 -- FORT LAUDERDALE - Tom Glavine is more than the guy John Maine plays catch with every day. Glavine is Maine's off-speed guru.

He will lecture on the whens and whys of throwing a changeup, and should the tutorials dictate, Glavine will get down into a catcher's squat to create a better visual guide for Maine. The pitch only means everything to Glavine, his Cooperstown ticket punched based on the precision and nerve to throw slow, slower and slowest.

CHANGE FOR THE BETTER: John Maine, who allowed one hit in two innings of yesterday's 6-3 loss to the Orioles, is working on adding a changeup that could make him a vital part of the Mets rotation.

HUMBERSTRUCK
METS PROSPECT HAS AW-PHIL OUTING
By MARK HALE

March 5, 2007 -- FORT LAUDERDALE - Facing Ramon Hernandez yesterday, Philip Humber threw a wild pitch. Later in the same at-bat, Humber hit Hernandez.

Humber - the Mets' second-best pitching prospect - was pretty dismal in his spring debut, a 6-3 loss to the Orioles.

COLLISION COURSE: Mets pitcher Philip Humber gets run over by the Orioles' Corey Patterson at first base during yesterday's 6-3 loss. Humber pitched one inning and allowed five runs.

Arms Look Good in Loss to Indians

The Mets lost to the Indians, 2-1, this afternoon, though there were several encourgaging pitching performances. Oliver Perez and Alay Soler each allowed one run in three-inning outings. Scott Schoeneweis tossed a scoreless seventh, followed by two scoreless innings by Joe Smith. The lone run came on David Wright's sacrifice fly.
