KISSIMMEE, Fla. - In a state where residents only a few years older already are worried about early-bird specials, the Mets' starting nine yesterday contained four 40-something members.

Moises Alou is the key offseason addition. Julio Franco is the timeless bench sage. Sandy Alomar Jr. is just trying to hold on to his career.

DELGADO BATTLING STIFF NECK
By MARK HALE

March 7, 2007 -- KISSIMMEE - Carlos Delgado's mission will be to get new bedding.

Because of a stiff neck, the first baseman wasn't able to make the trip here yesterday for the Mets' 7-2 win over the Astros.

"I woke up with a stiff neck, so it didn't make any sense to go all the way to Kissimmee if you can't swing or if you can't play," he said. "So I just stayed back and took my treatment."

MOISES SEES METS IN PROMISED LAND
By MARK HALE

March 7, 2007 -- KISSIMMEE - Typically, Moises Alou says his spring trainings aren't very productive.

"I usually have good Aprils, though," he said.

If you have to pick a month to get going, April works. Through the first week of games this year, Alou's spring has been normal for him - he had struggled as the Mets' new left fielder. But yesterday he began to have some success.

Stats Sheet: Another Reason to Celebrate Reyes

The folks at Stats Inc. have provided a few Mets-related statistics:

For the first time in nearly 20 years, a player put himself in scoring position at least 100 times last season, based on his total of doubles, triples and steals of second base. In fact, two players did it. Mets star Jose Reyes collected 30 doubles, 17 triples and 56 steals of second base to put himself in scoring position 103 times. Florida rookie Hanley Ramirez did it 101 times, with 46 doubles, 11 triples and 44 steals of second. The last player before them to reach the 100 mark was Vince Coleman with the 1987 Cardinals, though he relied on 85 steals. Coleman had just 27 extra-base hits that season, while Ramirez (74) and Reyes (66) had more than twice that total in 2006.
