My Opening Day Roster (If Camp Ended Today)
With Adkins and Park's outings, it seems like Mike Pelfrey and Joe Smith are taking steps toward securing the final two spots on the roster. There's still nearly three full weeks left, but my predicted roster if camp broke today would look like this:
Rotation
Tom Glavine Orlando Hernandez Oliver Perez John Maine Mike Pelfrey
Bullpen
Billy Wagner Aaron Heilman Scott Schoeneweis Pedro Feliciano Ambiorix Burgos
Jorge Sosa Joe Smith
Lineup
C-Paul Lo Duca 1B-Carlos Delgado 2B-Jose Valentin 3B-David Wright SS-Jose Reyes
LF-Moises Alou CF-Carlos Beltran RF-Shawn Green
Bench
Ramon Castro Julio Franco Damion Easley Endy Chavez David Newhan

Esquire: Zito Turned Off by Mets Brass
The April issue of Esquire has a 4,200-word piece on Barry Zito's winter negotiations. The author, Chris Jones, paints a picture of Zito turned off by the Mets dinner with him in Beverly Hills in December. The work is copyrighted, so I can't give an excerpt, but I will quote one relevant passage.
For the record, when the Mets insist they won't go beyond five years and $75 million, and the Giants are offering seven years at $18 million per season, it's about the money, no matter what other factors are mentioned. And mind you, the most inflammatory material below is from the Esquire author, not directly quoted from Zito.

Soler's Hard Work Not Enough, as Mets Cut Him
Alay Soler was released last night, the Daily News learned, ending his dream of becoming a Mets rotation staple. Soler had a difficult journey from Cuba to the big leagues, as my colleague Christian Red wrote about in a visit to Soler's home in Virginia in February 2006.
Now that Soler is a free agent, you may want to refresh your memory about his difficult ordeal. He really had worked hard this winter. You could tell he was a lot trimmer and more muscular in his upper body than during last season.
