Heilman elbows way back

Thursday, March 15th 2007, 4:00 AM

LAKELAND, Fla. - Aaron Heilman, who has not pitched since allowing four runs in an inning against the Tigers six days ago, hopes to return to action tomorrow night against the Marlins. Heilman has tendinitis in his right elbow, from which he had bone chips surgically removed on Oct.23. "Just a little nagging," he said. "I'll get a little extra time now when we can afford it rather than later."

Julio Franco, out a week with left wrist tendinitis, is also eyeing tomorrow for a possible return. Jose Valentin, who was scratched from Tuesday's game with neck spasms, described himself yesterday as "stiff, but way better."

Mets arms 2 of a kind
Pelfrey, Maine deliver

LAKELAND, Fla. - John Maine hasn't searched for an apartment yet in New York, or signed up on the clubhouse list to have his vehicle transported north on I-95.

He ought to. So, as it's becoming clear, should Mike Pelfrey.

Continuing similarly successful springs, Maine and Pelfrey had similarly successful performances yesterday against a Tigers lineup that included seven World Series starters. Each limited the Tigers to wind-aided solo homers to left field in four-inning appearances during a 2-0 loss. Each has allowed only one earned run in nine Grapefruit League innings for identical 1.00 ERAs.

WRIGHT TIPS CAP TO TIGERS' STAFF
By MICHAEL MORRISSEY

March 15, 2007 -- LAKELAND - David Wright is a positive thinker, and he took something good out of his team's bad day at the plate. The Mets only managed five hits against excellent Tiger pitching in a 2-0 loss to Detroit.

Detroit hurlers Kenny Rogers (five innings, three hits), Joel Zumaya, Fernando Rodney, Wil Ledezma and Todd Jones did the same buzz-saw routine to the Mets as they did to the Yankees in the first round of the playoffs last October. Carlos Beltran's first-inning double was the only extra-base hit.

PEL CURVE RISING
YOUNG STARTER IMPRESSING METS
By MICHAEL MORRISSEY

March 15, 2007 -- LAKELAND, Fla. - Talking matter-of-factly, John Maine asked some reporters what they'd be writing yesterday afternoon. But then he answered his own question.

"Who's the story of the day?" Maine wondered before adding a moment later, "Pelfrey."

Indeed. Although Maine was very strong over a four-inning start against the Tigers, Mike Pelfrey continues to excite the people inside and around the Mets. The 2005 first-round pick, like Maine, allowed one run over four frames during the Mets' 2-0 defeat to Detroit in Tigertown.

BEARING DOWN: Mike Pelfry, looking to grab a spot in the Mets' rotation, allowed only one run in four innings during yesterday's 2-0 loss to the Tigers.
