Minaya: Sanchez to Have Surgery, Out Until August

Duaner Sanchez is headed for a second surgery on his surgically repaired right shoulder, a source told the Daily News. The Mets have yet to announce the procedure. Sanchez heard a pop while throwing on the mound Thursday for the first time since Aug. 1 surgery to repair a separated shoulder.

UPDATE: Omar Minaya confirmed that Sanchez has a hairline fracture in his shoulder that will require surgery and keep Sanchez out until August.

Smith 'Terrified' of Not Making Team

Joe Smith is on edge, despite the fact he seems destined for the roster.

"I'm not nervous," Smith said.

"Terrified."

Smith has been taking good-natured ribbing from teammates. When he sat at his locker with his plate overflowing with food before tonight's game against the Dodgers, starting pitcher Tom Glavine joked, referring to it looking like Smith's last meal, "Joe, you going to the electric chair?"

PORT ST. LUCIE - Duaner Sanchez's July 31 taxicab accident continues to haunt the reliever - and the Mets.

Sanchez, who felt a pop Thursday while throwing off a mound for the first time since the I-95 collision in Miami, has a hairline fracture of a small bone in the front of his surgically repaired right shoulder.

Milledge injury lends hand to Ben's chance to make Mets

PORT ST. LUCIE - The pain in Lastings Milledge's bruised right hand had not noticeably decreased a day after being struck with a pitch - raising the possibility Milledge won't be with the team despite playing well enough to earn a spot. X-rays showed no break, but Milledge said of the bone bruise: "Sometimes contusions take just as long. You never know. It's kind of like either five days or two weeks. At least you know when it's broken you have six weeks to go."

Milledge said it was "a little iffy" whether he would be ready by Sunday, when the Mets open the season in St. Louis, though he predicted he would be good to go by April 5, the day Triple-A New Orleans' season begins. Milledge is hitting .352 in 54 Grapefruit League at-bats.

PORT ST. LUCIE - The moment Shawn Green first spotted Guillermo Mota in the Mets' clubhouse, the right fielder opened his arms and hugged the reliever.

"Vacaciones?" Green asked yesterday.

"No more vacations," Mota replied in English. "Work now."

CHEATS LURK EVERYWHERE

March 27, 2007 -- PORT ST. LUCIE - After watching Guillermo Mota enter the Mets clubhouse yesterday, there is no doubt in my mind that baseball will never get a handle on the problem of performance-enhancing drugs. Just to make that clear, I said never.

Mota was welcomed with open arms, welcomed more like a conquering hero than an admitted drug cheat.

UGLY TRUTH: Guillermo Mota walks around Mets camp like a returning hero yesterday and was welcomed as such, even though he's an admitted steroid cheater.

GUILLERMO TO FANS: FORGIVE ME
By MARK HALE

March 27, 2007 -- PORT ST. LUCIE - Now that he's back, one thing Guillermo Mota said yesterday that he wants to do is "prove to everybody I'm a good pitcher."

Mota is suspended for the first 50 games of the season due to steroids, and yesterday he arrived in camp and addressed his drug test. He had apologized in a statement earlier.

BAD BREAK, DUANER
By MARK HALE

March 27, 2007 -- PORT ST. LUCIE - Duaner Sanchez's season has practically been killed.

Sanchez threw his first bullpen session of spring training on Thursday morning, and the Mets' righty reliever - who's rehabbing a separated shoulder - had to stop after four minutes and 11 pitches. He went back inside, saw a doctor and was told he was breaking scar tissue.
