A-Rod and Pujols easy over a singles hitter with speed.

I would have to say Alex Rodriguez, and Jose Reyes, A-rod can deliever in the clutch with power, and Reyes always has a high average wikth decent RBI's and he just has the excitement to be one of the best

You have to include Vlad with all the others mentioned.

And I think the list is complete.

Well we are forgetting some of the amazing pitchers. I think that Jon Papelbon, Jake Peavy, and Johan Santana are some of the best pitchers in the MLB. I know Johan is stuggling this year, but he is still amazing with an aawesome arsenal of pitches

Ichiro is pretty close to the top, But A-Rod gets my vote.

I think the difference in skills between hitters and pitchers is too dramatic to say that one single player is the best in the sport. I can agree with a discussion on who is the best hitter and best pitcher, but not one person that is better than everyone else. Sure, Alex Rodriguez may become the home run king one day while he's still in his thirties, but can he strike out his teammate Andy Phillips as easily as the most mediocre pitcher could? I don't think so. It is this perspective that leads people to say with excellent reason that Babe Ruth is the greatest player ever. He was a terrific pitcher, and an outstanding batter. Just because he is not the very best at either doesn't make him any farther from being the best ever, but he was the entire sport of baseball smashed into one person.

As for the best hitter, I think it is, in fact, Alex Rodriguez, although Pujols may prove to best him some day if he stays healthy. A-Rod's "down year" last year included 35 home runs and 121 RBI with a .290 average, and anything up from that is nothing short of spectacular.

The best pitcher in the game right now is easily Johan Santana whose 3.15 ERA with 203 strikeouts and 44 walks in 194 innings this year is considered "struggling."

If those are your down seasons, you've got something special going on. Those players are the best respective hitters and pitchers in my mind, but neither is any better than the other, since they both do seperate sides of the game. In baseball, offense and defense are completely different games within the large game, while in other sports, they are similiar, with one team controlling the ball. In the only sport where the defense controls the ball, there can't be one singulary best player.
