SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners placed right-hander Paul Abbott on the disabled list Tuesday night with inflammation in his right shoulder and recalled right-hander Justin Kaye from Triple-A Tacoma.
The move is retroactive to Monday.
Abbott, who was 17-4 last season, has struggled this season. He earned a spot in the starting rotation as the Mariners' No. 3 pitcher, but was demoted to the bullpen April 27 and replaced in the rotation by Joel Pineiro.
The 34-year-old Abbott is 1-3 this season with an 11.96 ERA. He has made five starts and started the 2001 season on the DL with stiffness in his right shoulder.
Kaye is 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA in 12 games with Tacoma.
