Took in the Curve game against New Britain last night. John Grabow pitched for the Curve. He is a tall LHP with a nice curve ball but didn't seem to be able to hit his spots even though he lasted 7 IP. He gave up a grand slam in the 2nd inning. Throws a lot of pitches and walks batters even after getting ahead in the count. I had him at 81 pitches through four innings. The Curve played a lot of guys I was not familiar with and who looked like they were a bit older than your garden variety AA player. This guy Sefcik went 3-5 and Randall Meadows (who the hell is he?) played well at SS. Tony Alvarez looks like a prospect as does Rico Washington (who did make a dumb baserunning mistake but is fast). JJ Davis delivered a clutch pinch hit to ice the game. The scoring reminded me of a high school game, back and forth, hits that should have been caught (a line drive triple that the outfielder overplayed), walks, etc. Lots of fun though. It's great to see so many families and you can't get a bad seat. Got to see Carlos Rivera pinch hit. He has a long batting stroke but looks like a ball player.

Grabow has NEVER been able to hit his spots. If he was a right hander, he would have been released a year ago.

Randy Meadows is a utility infielder who came to the Curve when injuries came about.

You're probably right about Grabow. Where did that adage about LHP developing later come from anyway? One other item I forget to mention is that Alvarez left the game with an injury. Maybe a hamstring? JJ Davis pinch hit and played RF while the RF moved to LF. All in all Altoona looks devoid of talent that will advance beyond perhaps Altoona, save for Alvarez, Washington and Davis. Chris Spurling looked god pitching in relief. Good build for a pitcher.

Alvarez's injury wasn't disclosed. I hope it's not a hamstring.

Altoona actually was supposed to contend for the playoffs this year but have just recently picked the pace up.

This team was really, really talented before injuries.
