Pittsburgh Burghers
PL, 1890
The Pittsburgh Burghers were organized and managed by Ned Hanlon, the manager of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys and one of the most active members of the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players in 1889. With financial backing from John M. Beemer and M.B. Lennon, Hanlon rebuilt the Alleghenys' old park and recruited almost all of his teammates to join him in 1890.
First baseman Jake Beckley hit .324 with 10 home runs, 120 RBIs and 22 triples to lead an offense that posted a league-worst .260 average. The pitching wasn't much better, and the Burghers ended up finishing 6th.

As a result of the team's poor play, only 117 000 fans showed up all season long. When the NL began to dismantle the PL following the season, Pittsburgh was the second franchise to surrender. Beemer and Lennon joined with their rivals from the Alleghenys to form the Pittsburgh Athletic Company, which assumed ownership of the Alleghenys. Hanlon and virtually all of the players also returned to the Alleghenys.
