PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona's Randy Johnson passed Walter Johnson for eighth place in career strikeouts in the second inning against Los Angeles on Sunday despite his worst start in more than a year.
Johnson got his 3,509th strikeout -- one better than Walter Johnson -- when he got Brian Jordan swinging at an 85 mph slider in the second inning. It came on a 2-2 pitch.
But the left-hander ran into trouble later, getting only three more strikeouts before coming out of the game after five innings with his team trailing 7-4. Johnson finished has 3,512 strikeout -- 22 behind Gaylord Perry for No. 7 on the career list.
The last time he gave up seven earned runs was on April 8, 2001, when he allowed 11 hits and nine runs in a 9-4 loss to St. Louis.
Johnson needed one strikeout to tie Walter Johnson, a Hall of Fame right-hander, and did it by getting Shawn Green for the second out of the first inning.
Green, who was 11-for-13 in three previous games, took three called strikes, grimacing after the third.
Johnson had his 175th career double-digit strikeout game -- second only to Nolan Ryan -- and fourth in 10 starts on Tuesday.
