Tuesday, July 17, 2001 - OAKLAND, Calif. - As Todd Hollandsworth returned to crutches this week, the Colorado Rockies have little choice but to confront the possibility that their starting left fielder is finished for the season. The leading candidate to replace him is former Rockies center fielder Darryl Hamilton.

Inflammation and bleeding remain within the bruised area of the bone. Hollandsworth, who was batting .368 at the time of his injury, is able to walk without pain. Any running or jumping, however, reminds him that the bone will heal only when it's good and ready.

The Rockies were close to having their backup plan in place today, when they expect to finalize arrangements with Hamilton. Now 36, Hamilton batted .331 for the Rockies from the time he was acquired at the July 31 trading deadline in exchange for Ellis Burks in 1998, to when Hamilton was dealt again at the deadline in '99, this time to the New York Mets for Hal McRae.

The plan is to send Hamilton to Triple-A Colorado Springs for two weeks and then bring him up to play left field and perhaps spell Juan Pierre in center.

After Hamilton was traded two years ago, he publicly criticized the Rockies' attitude on the field and in the clubhouse. His comments weren't received well by manager Jim Leyland's regime and several Rockies players, though the team's turnover has been considerable since.

After hitting .339 for the Mets in the final two months of 1999, Hamilton missed most of last season with a foot injury and wasn't happy that upon his return, Timo Perez and Tsuyoshi Shinjo took away his playing time. Last month, Hamilton went into manager Bobby Valentine's office to protest his playing time and basically came out of the meeting with his release.

Just to make this rumor a fact, the Rockies signed Hamilton to a minor league contract yesterday, July 18. He will report to the Sky Sox, AAA Colorado Springs.
