Hundley returns: Todd Hundley was activated before Wednesday's 5-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He took the place of DeShields, who was placed on the disabled list with an inflamed right hip joint.
DeShields said the injury has been bothering him all season.
"This is just going to give me some time to let it calm down," DeShields said.
He opened the season as the Cubs' second baseman but has lost that job to Bobby Hill. He has been playing sparingly off the bench, going 1-for-7 as a pinch hitter.
With Girardi catching Jon Lieber, Hundley did not get into the game. With two outs in the ninth, Baylor sent Roosevelt Brown to the plate as a pinch hitter instead of Hundley.
Baylor said Hundley will start Thursday's day game and probably also Friday's series opener against Houston, with Jason Bere on the mound.
Hundley, who was sidelined with a dislocated left thumb, is hitting .128. His average slid as he tried to play through the injury.
"I'd like to get Todd at-bats," Baylor said. "He could be a big plus."
