Roger Brown, a Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter, reported this week that sources say Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro has talked with Milwaukee about a potential trade that would send starting pitcher Bartolo Colon to the Brewers for several top minor-league prospects.

Colon, the team's ace starter, is one of the Indians likely to be traded if management pulls the plug on the disappointing 2002 season and starts dealing veterans for badly needed young talent.

And Milwaukee has several promising young players, including right-handed pitcher Mike Jones (a starter who throws in the mid-90s), infielders J.J. Hardy and Bill Hall (the Brewers' minor-league player of the year in 2001) and outfielders David Krynzel and Cristian Guerrero (cousin of Montreal slugger Vladimir Guerrero).

God, I hate hearing all these trade rumors; I don't know how the players aren't affected by it because it really bugs me and I don't play for the team. I guess I got spoiled the last 7 years when there was virtually no trade talk.

I was hearing he was going down the road to the Reds, for Juan Encarnacion and some Reds farm hands!

If he goes to the Reds it better not be for Encarnacion and others, unless those others include Dunn and/or Kearns.

We have Colon locked up this year and next. Trading him would be very foolish.

I agree. I would love to see him stay because he is a great pitcher that anchors a young staff. If we trade him we not only are basically sacrificing the rest of the season, but decimating our pitching staff.

We traded Eckersley when he was a young pitcher. Let's hope we know better this time.

Didn't we trade Eck when he was a starter, and not a very good one? He didn't blossom as the dominant closing pitcher that he is known for until his early thirties. If he had stayed in Cleveland, he probably wouldn't have had a Hall Of Fame type career as we had Doug Jones as our closer.

As I remember it, The Eck started as a great young pitcher for a poor team. He never developed into the 8 innings per start pitcher that we needed back then. With a little run support and some bullpen help his W-L numbers would have been great. I think he won about 15 his Rookie year and he had pretty much the same kind of explosive pitch arsenal that he used as a dominant closer a decade later.

I think we traded him because he was having an affair with his Gold Glove Center Fielder's wife.

Would that also happen to be a certain Indians broadcaster as well?

Yep, Rick Manning, A.K.A. Archie.

Eck was actually a pretty good pitcher for the Indians. He went 13-7 as a rookie with a 2.60 ERA... in the following two seasons he went 13-12 and 14-13 respecivelky with ERAs of 3.43 and 3.53... all this while being only 20, 21, and 22 years old. He pitched 247.1 innings in the last season in Cleveland.

As for Colon, I think it would be a mistake to trade him. Especially considering the way they have played the last week or so. I think this Indians team can still be avery good team and could pull out the division.
