MINNEAPOLIS (TICKER) -- Brad Radke is back on the disabled list, just 12 pitches after his return.
After being activated from the 15-day DL earlier Thursday, the Minnesota Twins' ace righthander aggravated a groin injury in the first inning of his start against the Anaheim Angels.
Sidelined since May 14 with a pulled right groin, Radke re-injured himself after retiring one batter in the first inning. Radke was placed back on the DL after Minnesota's 7-6 win in 10 innings.
"I couldn't do it," Radke said. "It was painful. The sad part is I haven't been feeling it, not even tightness. I went out and all of a sudden, I felt it."
Radke did not factor in the decision in his latest start and is 4-2 with a 5.23 ERA this season.
The 29-year-old was 15-11 with a 3.94 ERA last season and has a 97-97 career record.
The Twins replaced Radke on the roster by calling up lefthander Johan Santana from Class AAA Edmonton of the Pacific Coast League. Santana was 5-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 11 games, including nine starts.
Minnesota (31-23) is 2 1/2 games in front of the Chicago White Sox for the lead in the American League Central, despite dealing with injuries to several key players.
Third baseman Corey Koskie and designated hitter David Ortiz both were on the 15-day DL earlier in the month, while righthander Joe Mays is on the 60-day DL with an injury to his pitching elbow.
Second baseman Luis Rivas has a right forearm injury and is on a rehabilitation assignment at Class A Fort Myers. Starter Rick Reed left Wednesday's game in the second inning with a stiff neck.
