NOTEBOOK
Chad Hermansen didn't play yesterday because he has a sore right shoulder and received a cortisone shot for the discomfort. The shoulder was injured Monday night when he tried to make a catch near the wall. It's not known yet if he will be placed on the disabled list.
The Chicago Cubs' first run yesterday was scored by Todd Hundley. Or was it? Hundley was ruled safe at the plate on Alex Gonzalez's double off the right-field wall. It appeared the relay from Craig Wilson and Abraham Nunez to Jason Kendall might have been in time to get Hundley. Kendall made a sweep tag, but plate umpire Matt Hollowell called Hundley safe. Hollowell told Manager Lloyd McClendon that Kendall missed the tag. "I hit something," Kendall said. "And the only thing back there was Todd."
Reliever Josias Manzanillo, on the disabled list after arthroscopic surgery May 7 to remove bone chips from his right elbow, is perhaps a week away from beginning a rehab assignment in the minor leagues. "He needs a little bit more preparation before he's ready to start facing hitters in game situations," trainer Kent Biggerstaff said. Pitching coach Spin Williams said Manzanillo will throw in a simulated game today in St. Louis, along with Ryan Vogelsong. If today's session goes well, Manzanillo will throw again Monday in Montreal, then the team will determine if he's ready to begin that rehab assignment.
Second baseman Pokey Reese, out with a sore index finger, should return to the starting lineup tonight. "It won't hurt to give him more batting practice [yesterday]," McClendon said. "And Kerry Wood is a pretty tough guy to come back against."
Brian Giles extended his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games with his seventh-inning home run. During the streak, Giles is 20 for 40. Against the Cubs this season, Giles is 17 for 35 with four home runs and eight RBIs.
